THANK YOU

Flash back to last Friday when we celebrated Braemar Gallery and Blue Mountains Cultural Centre volunteers as part of Volunteer Week. It was a lovely afternoon tea in the Public Sculpture Garden outside Braemar House. Thank you to everyone who could make it, and to exhibiting artist Neil Laredo for his artist talk, delivered mid installation of his new sculpture.

Braemar Gallery is open today through to Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm - all thanks to our volunteers - with two incredible exhibitions.

FREE FILM SCREENING

Presented by the Blue Mountains Refugee Support Group on the eve of Refugee Week, there will be a free screening of 'Freedom is Beautiful' next door at .mountains.theatre on Saturday 13 June.

'Freedom is Beautiful' is a deeply moving documentary about the lives of two asylum seekers, Farhad Bandesh and Mostafa (Moz) Azimitabar, who flee persecution from Iran to Australia in an uplifting story of the power of love, hope and shared humanity.

As part of the event, Moz will also be attending an artist meet and greet at his 'Freedom is Beautiful' exhibition at Braemar Gallery prior the screening.

Saturday 13 June
5pm Braemar Gallery: artist meet and greet
6pm Blue Mountains Theatre: documentary, talk and supper

Warning - the film is classified 15+MA. It contains graphic images of death and stories of torture.

HILL PAINTING PRIZE - SUBMISSIONS CLOSE SUNDAY

Get your submissions into the Mountains Cultural Centre for the inaugural Hill Painting Prize by midnight, this Sunday 24 May.

This exciting new national painting award will be exhibited at the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre in August and September this year.

PUBLIC SCULPTURE GARDEN NEWS

Something new is coming to the front garden of Braemar House!

Artwork by Neil Laredo is being installed today. We can't wait to see 'Bell' in all it's glory later this afternoon.

The Public Sculpture Garden is open all day (and night), every day of the week.

Neil is also exhibiting inside Braemar Gallery with his exhibition, 'Identity - A Self Portrait', running until Sunday 21 June. Join the official celebration for the exhibition tomorrow from 2 pm, or visit the gallery from Thursday to Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm, all thanks to our volunteer team.

Information about Neil's sculpture will be coming soon.

NEW EXHIBITIONS AT BRAEMAR GALLERY:

'Neil Laredo | Identity - A Self Portrait' features drawings based on family photographs, as well as sculpture pieces, highlighting the evolving nature of identity across generations.

'Moz Azimitabar with the Blue Mountains Refugee Support Group | Freedom is Beautiful' includes new and recent works by Kurdish refugee artist Mostafa “Moz” Azimitabar, including his 2022 Archibald self-portrait and a series of medium and large-scale canvases. Each work, painted with a toothbrush, reflects survival, connection and freedom.

After a great install earlier this week, we're excited to reopen from 10 am tomorrow with two new exhibitions:

Moz Azimitabar with the Blue Mountains Refugee Support Group | 'Freedom is Beautiful'

Thanks to Tim Newman, Geoff Matthews and Amy Rowntree from our volunteer Exhibitions Team for supporting Neil and Moz with their exhibition installations. A big "happy National Volunteers Week!" cheer to them.

CELEBRATING OUR VOLUNTEERS

Today marks the beginning of National Volunteer Week!

From our exhibition programming and installations to our volunteer inductions and rostering, and everything in between, Braemar Gallery runs thanks to an incredible team of volunteers.

Thank you to each of you for allowing this art space to be available to artists and open to the community.

This year's theme is "Your Year to Volunteer". If you're keen to learn more about joining the Braemar Gallery volunteer team, please get in touch via [email protected]
