A Natural Response Group Exhibition

Artist Spotlight 🌟 Paul Innes

aul Innes creates abstract paintings that explore and interpret the natural environment. In his work, sensory elements of the outdoors are translated through composition, colour, tone, texture, mark‑making, and the physicality of paint. With this rich visual toolkit, he seeks to develop his own evolving language- a process he describes as a journey across the canvas, uncovering visual truths and revealing traces of discovered life.

His practice is driven by curiosity and the daily pull of the studio. Mixing colours, glazing, and drawing varied lines that interact with passages of thick, warm paint are, for him, reason enough to pull on his paint‑covered overalls each morning. He approaches each new work like a rambler choosing a trusted walking stick, stepping into a landscape of unknown possibilities.

Every painting becomes part of a larger story still unfolding, moving from one chapter to the next with energy, challenge, and delight.

A Natural Response Group Exhibition

Artist Spotlight 🌟 Genevieve Hartney

Genevieve Hartney is an abstract landscape artist living and working in the northern coastal suburbs of Perth, Western Australia. Working primarily with acrylic on canvas, she draws inspiration from the diverse landscapes she encounters, translating their forms, colours, and shifting light into highly detailed, atmospheric works. Her paintings invite viewers to share in her artistic vision and to immerse themselves in the richness of the Australian environment.

Travel plays a significant role in Genevieve’s practice. Recent art trips to the Kimberley, Western Australia, and Tasmania have allowed her to draw and paint on site, gathering visual impressions that later inform her studio work. She combines these observations with imagination and an intuitive creative process, aiming to capture something special about each place she visits and to offer a compelling visual experience for both herself and the viewer.

Genevieve is represented in the City of Wanneroo Art Collection and has received multiple awards, including recognition in the Mid‑West Art Prize, Minnawarra Art Awards, and the City of Rockingham Art Prize.

🌟 Happening this Sunday 17 May! 🌟

Join the artists for three exciting and unique opportunities to gain valuable insight into their respective practices.

Genevieve Hartney will provide a demonstration of her latest drawing technique, using charcoal and oil on cotton paper to produce a smoky, moody landscape drawing. She will also discuss her art practice and processes.

Rachel Beh K Lang will discuss "Navigating Abstract Art and Making Sense of It", her early venture into abstract painting, and her trying to understand how her painting "happened" or at times, take its own course in the process. She will also talk through some of her processes referencing one or two of her paintings on show.

Paul Innes will be playing guitar and chatting about how music provides inspiration for his visual art.

The gallery will be open from 1-4pm on Sunday.

A Natural Response Group Exhibition

Artist Spotlight 🌟 Rachel Beh K Lang

Born in Penang, Malaysia, Rachel Beh K Lang is an award‑winning textile artist turned painter whose practice is grounded in intuition, sensory awareness, and a deep curiosity about her surroundings. Since picking up the paintbrush in 2020, she has embraced abstraction as a natural evolution of her earlier textile work, carrying forward the same intuitive approach to rhythm, layering, and mark‑making.

Rachel draws inspiration from what surrounds her; nature, architecture, and the subtle forms, shadows, and structures that catch her eye, as well as and also diving deep into her senses, lived experiences of a cross-cultural background,

These impressions often begin as large‑scale line drawings, which become the foundation for her spontaneous, non‑objective paintings. Working in a layered, intuitive process, she seeks to capture the spirit and atmosphere of a subject rather than its likeness, allowing each work to unfold through movement and emotion.

Largely self‑taught, Rachel continues to expand her practice through ongoing study at local art centres, enriching her cross‑disciplinary background and shaping a body of work that is both personal and deeply expressive.
