While we were in Tasmania, I met up with Rachel Harris () in her home town to see Belinda Kurczok (.belindakurczok) and her exhibition Birds at the Salamanca Arts Centre. The gallery is an amazing space and absolutely worth the visit.
Belinda’s watercolour and acrylic works, applied in a watercolour style, were beautifully presented — painted on heavy‑gsm watercolour paper for the larger works and on watercolour blocks for the smaller pieces to keep the surface perfectly flat. Her simple timber framing suits her approach, keeping the focus on the birds, the wood textures, and the lichen and foliage she paints with such precision. I love her Japanese‑influenced aesthetic: actual‑size birds, calm white backgrounds, and a real sense of stillness.
Rachel and I walked through the exhibition together, then caught up over lunch before flying home. A lovely way to end the trip — and always inspiring to spend time with artists whose work I admire.
Thanks ladies!
