What I love is that the work doesn’t arrive carrying the weight of that history. It’s immediate. Minimal, abstract and assured. Unmistakably Arno.

A first glimpse of MYCELIUM, a new digital artwork by Joshua Connelly (IOSHVA), artist and Creative Director at SHPSHFTR Gallery.

An evolving work shaped by participation, where each contribution becomes part of a growing network.

For testing, I seeded the system with 5,000 contributors.

Two fluid forms sit in quiet exchange, suspended within an expansive neutral field. A muted blue-grey arc above is loosely mirrored by deep red below, while a solitary orange point introduces a small but deliberate moment of intensity.

There’s an extraordinary confidence in Tony’s ability to reduce a composition to just a handful of elements and still create movement, tension and balance.

Tony was dropping off a couple of paintings the other day when he got talking with a collector and supporter of the gallery who was admiring his work.

What followed was one of those unexpected conversations that make having a physical gallery so worthwhile. They talked about the work, the thinking behind it, and the process of arriving at something that can appear so effortless.

There’s a lifetime of experience contained in Tony’s words. The confidence to remove rather than add. Knowing what matters, what doesn’t, and when a work has said enough.

Having someone of Tony’s calibre – genuine Australian design royalty, with a painting practice spanning decades and an extraordinary body of work behind him – as part of the SHPSHFTR stable is incredibly special.

To represent his work here on the Mid North Coast, and to have his trust in the vision for SHPSHFTR and what we’re building here, is an honour I don’t take lightly.

Being there to witness moments like this – artist, collector and conversation coming together naturally in the gallery – is a pretty special part of it too.
