Then and now…….
Reid & Fotheringham Store in the 1920’s
And current day as Nambucca River Department Store.
The verandah post still remains and also the residence above.
Portions of this store was moved to the new location at corner of River & Princess Street prior to 1929 when the lease expired on the above store.
Mr Harold Fotheringham went into partnership with his brother in law Mr Hugh Reid and that is how the Reid & Fotheringham legacy began around 1912.
Mr Fotheringham served in WWI and returned to Macksville in 1923 to resume his active role in the business.
Reid & Fotheringham m’s General Store was such a significant landmark in Macksville.

Then and now in River Street Macksville at the corner of Princess Street.
From this angle the new trees along near the Department Store hide the buildings that have changed and those that are very similar.
And just imagine a cow grazing on the side of the road in town such as in the original photograph.
The museum will run ‘then and now’ photos for the next few weeks.
We would love you to show your loved ones and share their stories with us.

Thank you to Nambucca Valley Council for putting on a beautiful Volunteers luncheon on Friday at Nambucca Rsl Club to personally thank and celebrate all of the work that volunteers are involved with in our wonderful community.
If you would like to also help promote and preserve your family’s and the communities history for future generations please join our dedicated little team at the museum.

This week is Volunteers Week and I would like to say a huge thank you for the dedication and time given to the museum by our amazing small team of volunteers.
You are appreciated immensely for all that you do. 💐

Volunteering is very rewarding and is satisfying to know that you are doing something for your community.
We desperately need volunteers at the museum, we only ask for three hours of your valuable time on a Wednesday or Saturday. And there are so many things to help with inside and outdoors.
Maybe you have semi retired, fully retired or just looking for social interaction.
Pop down on one of the open days and meet our small team, have a cuppa with us, I’m sure you will love it.

Flashback Friday to circa 1911 with an advertisement from Tate and Tate, a booklet filled with historical information of the Nambucca Valley.
Reid & Fotheringham store will always be fondly remembered by residents of the valley who shopped there back in the day.
It stocked everything from groceries, crockery, saddlery, clothing, furniture and much more. No wonder it was regarded as ‘The Store’.

Why not take a visit to the wonderful museum this weekend, better still why not become a volunteer and help preserve the history of Macksville & surrounding towns.
