Then and now…….
The Macksville Post Office opened for business in 1918, to accommodate the expanding town's needs.
The decision to design and rebuild the post office was made a couple of years prior in 1915, and in 1917 Department of Public Works & Railways were instructed to build the new post office.
There was a small telephone exchange building on River St side which in later years served as the mail contractors space.
Some changes have been made to the building over the decades such as the ramp on Cooper St side and covering the only fireplace inside.
The group of people are believed to be the staff, there are some names listed on the back of photograph from left to right-

A huge thank you to all those that supported the museum fundraiser yesterday with our Pre-loved Book Sale, Morning Tea & raffle.
We raised just over $400 in total 👏

A big shout out & thank you to our amazing team of volunteers who gave up their whole day in baking morning tea delights, setting up, washing up, packing up and being on duty for the afternoon shift. You are all worth your weight in gold. 🤩

$50 Meat voucher kindly donated by Nambucca Heads Butchers- Margaret

Flashback Friday to 1974 with magnificent wedding cakes featured in the Australian Women’s Weekly Wedding Cake Designs book.
Wedding cakes were certainly a work of art back in the day, something we do not see nowadays.

The main cover cake is a simple piped design around the base and decorations are roses and forget me nots.

Yellow roses and buds, with sprays of lily-of-the-valley, form the decorations on the second cake. The base has a broad band of lace piped separately then attached to the cake with royal icing. The unusual eyelet embroidery is made by inserting the end of a knitting needle into the centre of each embroidered flower, then piping round the edge of the hole before piping the petals in place. A lot of patience and skill is required for a job such as this.

Then and now…..
Today we take a look at the old Coonan Store at the corner of Wallace & Cooper Street Macksville opposite the Nambucca Hotel.
This store opened over one hundred years ago on 1st July 1916 and was known as ‘The Fashion Centre’ in Macksville was always well stocked with drapery, clothing, millinery accessories, fancy goods & boots.
It was noted as the most attractive store to the public and included spacious floors and high ceilings decorated in their finest quality.

The corner is now known as Macksville Pharmacy.
