And the Solstice is now! Sunday 21 June at 6:24pm is when the Sun reaches its southern most point

Have you ever noticed mornings keep getting darker even after the shortest day of the year? After the winter solstice, days in total start getting longer, but the extra daylight shows up in the afternoon, not the morning at first.

Why? Because Earth’s tilt and its slightly uneven orbit mean the “solar day” isn’t exactly 24 hours. Around the solstice, this pushes both sunrise and sunset a little later each day, delaying the latest sunrise until weeks after the solstice.

Hang in there, brighter mornings are coming!

Hungry for more of the sky? Visit this Thursday for Discover the Nighty Sky and explore the wonders of the universe with astronomer Dr Tanya Hill.
