HG COLLECTION IN FOCUS

Join Dr. Samantha Happé on the last Thursday of this month at 12pm for an intimate 30-minute curator’s talk.

AUGUST: The Good Life: Ian Bow’s Sculptures
Thursday 27 AUGUST, 12 PM

When Hamilton Gallery opened, five small sculptures by Melbourne artist Ian Bow were built into its architecture. Cast in bronze and aluminium, they imagined the ‘good life’ through earth, energy, counsel, self and serenity. This talk explores how Bow, the architect and Hamilton community collaborated to give these figures their meaning and place.

Tickets are FREE for this event.

Please note that while the Hamilton Gallery is currently closed this event will take place in the foyer entrance to the gallery and Library.

UPDATE: HAMILTON GALLERY TEMPORARY CLOSURE

Following the recent discovery of elevated levels of fungal spores within parts of the building, further specialist air quality testing was carried out on Wednesday 12 August. No additional fungal spores were detected in other areas of the Gallery.

Remediation works have now begun, with mould removal being undertaken in line with the advice of specialist contractors.

The timeline for reopening will depend on further testing once remediation works are completed. We are working hard to ensure the Gallery can reopen safely as soon as possible, and further updates will be announced as more information becomes available.

Our Education and Engagement team is continuing to deliver programs in schools and our regular workshops are running as normal from our popular Creator Lab space at 84 Brown St. Hamilton.

We appreciate your continued support as we work towards reopening the Gallery.

HAMILTON GALLERY CLOSED

Recent air quality testing at the Hamilton Gallery has identified elevated levels of fungal spores within parts of the building.

On the advice of specialist contractors, and out of an abundance of caution, Council has made the difficult decision to temporarily close the Gallery until further notice while further investigations and remediation works are undertaken.

Reports of moisture within the building activated further assessment which confirmed mould in three rooms within the building and subsequent air testing has shown elevated fungal spore levels. The contractor has advised that at this stage it is inconclusive whether the spores are linked to cross-contamination from water damage elsewhere in the building, or the active mould growth within the tested rooms themselves.

Expert advice is that the source of the contamination should be identified and addressed before the space is used for public events. A contractor will return to site next week for further assessment and remediation.

The health and wellbeing of our staff, volunteers, artists and visitors is our highest priority. While the effects of exposure to fungal spores can vary from person to person, we believe it is important to take a precautionary approach while the issue is fully assessed and resolved.

We know this news will be deeply disappointing for our community, particularly for those involved in the upcoming children's exhibition LOOK! and the much-anticipated Jimmi Buscombe exhibition. These exhibitions represent an enormous amount of work, creativity and passion, and we share the disappointment that they cannot proceed as planned at this time.

Council is committed to resolving the issue as quickly as possible and will continue to keep the community updated as more information becomes available.

We thank everyone for their understanding and patience as we work to ensure the Hamilton Gallery can safely reopen as soon as possible.

Hamilton Gallery regrets to advise that all public spaces will be temporarily closed until further notice.

Recent testing relating to indoor air quality has identified elevated levels of fungal spores in parts of the building. Further investigations are now underway, and remediation works will be completed before the Gallery reopens.

Following specialist advice, Council has made the difficult decision to temporarily close as a precautionary step in the best interests of the health and safety of our staff, volunteers, artists and visitors.

We know this will be disappointing, particularly given the opening of Jimmi Buscombe: First Images and LOOK! A Children's Exhibition this Saturday the 8th of August. We sincerely apologise for the disruption and appreciate the incredible work that has gone into these exhibitions.

Further updates we be announced as more information becomes available.

Thank you for your understanding and patience.

UPCOMING EXHIBITION: Cabinet of Wonders

Official Opening Event: Friday 28 August, 2026.

Curated in collaboration with the University of Melbourne’s Dr. Matthew Martin, Cabinet of Wonders explores the very beginnings of European museum tradition.

Hamilton Gallery is unique amongst Australian regional galleries in possessing an impressive collection of artworks typical of a late seventeenth-century Wunderkammer.

Drawing on this remarkable collection, the exhibition celebrates the visual and aesthetic pleasure that was an important aspect of early modern speculation about the nature of the world and humanity’s place within it.

Exhibition Dates: 29 August- 15 November 2026

UPCOMING EXHIBITION: In Our Care, A Friends of Hamilton Gallery Exhibition.

Official Opening Event: Friday 28 August, 2026.

With a fifty year history of fundraising, advocacy, and art appreciation, the Friends support the Hamilton Gallery in countless ways.

In Our Care is a collective showcase of what we treasure: family histories, friendships, creativity, and shared lives. Hamilton Gallery invited the Friends of the Gallery to choose a single object to share. To choose one thing is also to ask what we value, what we remember, and what we hope to pass on.

Alongside this are works from the Gallery’s collection, acquired through the generosity and dedication of the Friends. Together, they tell the story of a community that has cared not only for its own treasured possessions, but for the Gallery itself.

Exhibition Dates: 29 August - 15 November 2026
