Port of Echuca

Port of Echuca There’s always something happening at The Port of Echuca 🚢. Step into Australia’s Paddle Steamer Capital, where history meets the river’s everyday charm.

The Historic Port of Echuca precinct is an authentic working steam port, home to Australia’s largest fleet of steam-driven paddlesteamers. Although its major commodity has changed from wool to people, Port of Echuca still operates much the same as it did in the 1860s, with our shipwrights and steam engineers providing a vital role in the Port's operations today, just as they would have in the late 1800s.

Life can feel busy, noisy, and always in a hurry. Then there’s the Murray 🍂

Some experiences can’t be streamed, downloaded, or recreated. You just have to be there.

The water moves slower here. Conversations last longer. And suddenly, there’s nowhere else you need to be.

All aboard, your adventure awaits 👉 https://bit.ly/ToursPortofEchuca

Previously owned by the Evans Bros Sawmill, this Log Winch is still one of the oldest surviving original pieces of equipment relating to red gum timber milling 🪵

Once common along the Murray River, a Log Winch was designed to pull huge red gum logs from river barges, which were then manoeuvred onto rail trolleys for the sawmill.

If you didn't know, the entire wharf is constructed with red gum, and red gum is still used to fire up the PS Pevensey's boiler to this day 🔥

Now a rare sight, our Log Winch is one of the few remaining you can see in person here at The Port of Echuca!

If this has piqued your interest, we promise there is plenty more to discover!

Meet Daniel, the skipper at the wheel of the PS Pevensey ⚓

Before he was steering our 115-year-old paddlesteamer down the Murray, Daniel spent 17 years as a commercial fisherman out on the ocean 🌊

When his parents made the move to Echuca he followed, swapping saltwater for the river that's now both his workplace and playground (yes, he still fishes every chance he gets!)

The skipper job came about in true country-town fashion. While out fishing, Adam Fitton came along asking for tips. They got chatting, hit it off, and Adam mentioned a deckhand spot was going at the Port. Four and a half years later, 2 and half of those as our captain, Daniel is still here and proud to call The Port of Echuca home. 🛳️

Best moment so far? Realising halfway through a cruise that one of his passengers looked strikingly familiar, because they had already known each other from his Apollo Bay fishing days. Small world, big river!

Come aboard the PS Pevensey and say g'day to Daniel, just don't ask him to choose between fishing and skippering 😉

The Port of Echuca is one of Australia’s most important river trading ports for current and future generations to experience 🌊🚤

As a heritage listed site our team takes great pride in preserving the Wharf for you to enjoy - did you know that the entire structure is made from River Red Gum? An iconic tree species of the Australian landscape to say the least.

Once a bustling trade hub along the Murray River, today you can enjoy a variety of activities including wine tastings, pubs and cafes, gift shops, river cruises on a real paddlesteamer, walking tours, museums and so much more 🥂🎁

Ask the team what they recommend and plan your next visit!

If your weekend plans involve “doing nothing”… why not "do nothing" at the Port of Echuca? 😉

"Do nothing" on one of our daily river cruises, just let the steam engine carry you.

"Do nothing" on a horse and carriage ride, just take in the sights of the historical esplanade.

"Do nothing" while you sip wine and enjoy the fabulous Murray River views, a cool autumn breeze behind your back.

Doing nothing is great, but its even better at The Port ⛴️
