Glenda Cornell's Whistlestop Studio Gallery

A working studio with paintings, sculptures,ceramics, cards, jewellery, felting and much much more ... Glenda Cornell runs her Whistle Stop Studio Gallery in the Port of Echuca. When Glenda won the tender for the old railway station building she was very apprehensive. She thought she was too shy.

'I have been teaching art for a long time and I thought well, why not give it a go. I'm at a stage of

my life where I can decide what I need to do, and decide that things can change. I've been teaching art for a long time and I wasn't getting enough painting done while I was teaching. I love painting and I thought well this could be a good opportunity to actually paint as well as sell my art work. It's just a lovely place to be. I play all day, and talk to people.'

Glenda loves her cosy little building. 'It's more long than it is wide and it's like a corridor. People can look on either side so it's quite lovely. I can hang pieces on the back wall which gives you a big distance to walk back and look at the artwork.'

'People on a return visit to Echuca want to come and visit the gallery to see what I'm up to. So it's a thrill, a real thrill. It's that wonderful thrill that you're passing on something. Art can live on even after you.'

'Most people when they look at a piece of artwork will smile. You can't help but smile and feel good when you're looking at something you like. It's a great feeling to know that people really like what you do... when a little bit of magic happens in an art work and somebody recognizes it when they like it. They don't even have to purchase it. As long as they like it I'm happy. Although it's nice when they purchase it too of course.'

'You know you can be in High Street and everybody is moving fast and they've got their heads down and they're doing things. You walk into the port area and everyone slows down to a slower pace ... they're actually looking and it's a whole different atmosphere.'
