GALLERY 1 AND FOYER // LIGHT FROM DARKNESS // SANDY LAVER.....
The 1980's were a period of exploration and discovery for Sandy in her life, studies and her art. She continued her undergraduate degree at Deakin University, studying Literature and Visual Art. She has a remarkable command of language, writing with the same layered quality that can be found in her paintings.
Alongside teaching, family life and developing her own practice, Sandy began exhibiting her work publicly, with personal exhibitions from 1985, culminating in the commencement of a Master of Fine Art at La Trobe University (Bendigo). It was a significant period in her artistic development and, to those who know her work best, some of her most compelling paintings emerged from this time. She was finding her light and her own artistic language.

GALLERY 1 AND FOYER // LIGHT FROM DARKNESS // SANDY LAVER.....
Born in Waratah, NSW, in 1948, Sandy moved with her family to East Geelong in 1949. Sandy was never particularly inclined to follow the expected path. Many years later, Sandy would earn her own PhD in Visual Art. In the 70's she taught at Corio Technical College, then West Tech, where she met Ron.
Sandy and Ron married in 1978, and in 1979 their daughter was born. They settled in Newstead (central Victoria), building their mudbrick home over several years on a 20-acre bush block. The house and landscape would influence her artwork throughout the 1980s.

FOYER & GALLERY 1 // SANDY LAVER // LIGHT FROM DARKNESS .....
For Sandra Laver, painting has always been a way of looking beyond, with representing fleeting change a central interest throughout her work.
Her visual language developed through a lifelong engagement with different ways of understanding and describing the Earth. Western European landscape traditions, cartography, geomancy and Indigenous North East Arnhem Land painting shaped her thinking and observations of landscape and place.
Maps, grids, geometric forms and intricate crosshatching offered ways of suggesting pathways, relationships and realities that exist beneath or beyond the visible.
Beginning with the Australian landscape, her paintings explore physical, psychological and emotional energies. Alongside these energies are the ‘hidden’ geological and biological forms she imagined as existing within the physical environment, contributing to what she described as a ‘spirit of place’. Throughout her life, Sandra continued to learn, question and experiment.
Her formal study in visual arts began in the 1960s and culminated in doctoral research, followed later by further study in photography. This lifelong curiosity is embedded in the work. Painting became not simply making images, but a way of investigating the world and her place within it.
In 1965, Sandy began a Diploma of Art in Graphic Design at the Gordon Institute of Technology. Among her Diploma works is The Blue Cat, painted at just 17, an early glimpse of the artist emerging.

We're so grateful to have the opportunity to showcase this incredible body of work by Sandy Laver.
The collection spans a lifetime of creative practice, from the 60s when Sandy first started her artistic journey and education, all the way to 2010s and her photographic era.
This retrospective celebrates over five decades of work, featuring semi-abstract paintings that explore landscape, light, colour, memory and the unseen.

This will be the final week to come on in to Artisans and see Linet Hilsbergs incredible solo exhibition! Each piece inspired by travel, photography, nature and the animal kingdom. Truly worth a look in person, while you still can.

GALLERY 1 AND FOYER // TWICE CAPTURED // LINET HILSBERG.....
Today's highlights from the Twice Captured collection. Linet was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time to snap an in action shot of this Westpac Rescue helicopter, right off of her balcony at Kings Beach while visiting Caloundra Queensland. Once home, she took to her studio to recreate this moment with her new found love of pastels. This scene really has been captured twice, both by a Nikon P1000, and in artistic expression.
