Paintings by Peter Watts

May 28 – June 21, 2026

Opening drinks with the artist

Peter Watts is a distinguished Australian landscape artist, widely recognised for his evocative depictions of Southern Australia’s skies and rural terrain. A four-time finalist in the prestigious Glover Prize in Tasmania, he was awarded the People’s Choice Award in 2022 and the Hangers Prize in 2026, affirming both public and critical appreciation of his work.

In 2022, Peter also received “Best in Show” at the Camberwell Art Prize in Melbourne, further cementing his reputation as a leading voice in contemporary landscape painting,

Renowned for capturing fleeting, atmospheric moments, Watts masterfully renders the interplay of light and shadow across expansive horizons. His work is inspired by the shifting cloudscapes and elevated landscapes of his native Southern Australia, translating their subtle movements and tonal complexities into richly layered compositions.

Martin King - in Focus

An intimate collection of works of King unfolds upstairs at Salt Contemporary - atmospheric images suspended between memory, landscape and omen. Birds drift across fragile horizons, weather dissolves into fields of pigment and shadow, and recurring avian forms become quiet symbols of migration, extinction and transformation.

Working across painting, drawing and printmaking, King creates landscapes that feel cinematic, melancholic and deeply Australian - places where beauty and unease coexist. Rich indigo tones, layered surfaces and ghostly marks invite viewers into contemplative spaces shaped by disappearance, light and time.

This small upstairs presentation offers a powerful encounter with one of Australia’s most respected contemporary artists, whose work is held in major national and international collections, including the British Museum and the National Gallery of Victoria.
