This short film demonstrates Godwin’s process to craft the works currently on view. Using a subdued, harmonised palette and compositions punctuated by emptiness and pause, Godwin creates images that resist overt narrative or symbolism, instead inviting viewers into the evocative pleasures of paint itself.

Flowing lines outline chairs, tables, screens and still-life arrangements, transforming the apparently mundane into spaces that feel alive and attentive. His interiors and tabletops hover between representation and abstraction, where spatial relationships, pattern and rhythm become the true subject.

Across his career, whether working in egg tempera (seen here), acrylic, drawing or printmaking, Godwin has pursued a careful balance between discipline and spontaneity.

Sally Anderson ‘Holding Light’
alongside Peter Godwin and Ross Laurie
6 May – 26 May 2026

Sally Anderson’s works for ‘Holding Light’ refer to still life and landscape motifs that symbolise containment to reinterpret the feminine. These motifs include historical art references to paintings by men that place women and mothers within a male-defined environment. Namely, Anderson references Picasso’s ‘Bather with a Beach Ball’ (1928) and Bob Thompson’s ‘The Tempest’ (1965).

In Anderson’s latest works, she alters appropriated imagery and nestles it within the context of a larger composition. In doing so, she shifts ‘the presence of women and mothers from object to subject’.

Anderson conveys the complex lives of women while seamlessly weaving through her own experiences of motherhood, domesticity and creative practice.

Now Open – Peter Godwin, Sally Anderson, Ross Laurie ‘Holding Light’ until 26 May 2026

Bringing together the practices of Peter Godwin, Sally Anderson and Ross Laurie, ‘Holding Light’ considers the ways in which perception, memory, and material sensitivity converge in contemporary painting. Across three distinct practices, light emerges not simply as a visual phenomenon, but as a conceptual and emotional register—something held, diffused, and translated through gesture, surface, and duration.
