Alison McDonald’s 20-year practice is based in Townsville, North Queensland. Her art sits at the junction of consumer culture and environmental concern, ranging in size from microscopic jewellery to epic sculpture or installation.
McDonald completed her BVA (Hons) from James Cook University, then a Master of Art in Public Space at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. She has also had participated in an artist in residence program at Aberystwyth, UK, through an Arts Queensland Career Development Grant and Red Gate Gallery, Beijing. McDonald taught Sculpture at James Cook University and TAFE North Queensland and has previously toured a solo exhibition ‘Wanton, Wild & Unimagined’ around Australia.

McDonald has exhibited in national and international contexts, including Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi and Strand Ephemera, Townsville. Her work is held in public and private collections including the Royal North Shore Hospital, Visy Education Centre, Perc Tucker Gallery, Townsville City Council’s Integrated Sustainability Services, CQUniversity, Energy Super’s Townsville Office, Monterey Bay Aquarium, California and Stadiums Queensland. In 2025, she won the Art for Life Award, Queensland Regional Arts Awards.

Are you a current artisan associate who is a Queensland-based mid-career or established maker?

As a first opportunity for our member community, this call out is open exclusively to artisan professional associates. We are seeking up to seven mid-career and established artists, makers and designers whose work demonstrates excellence in contemporary craft practice. Through diverse materials and approaches, the exhibition is designed to inspire regional makers and collectors by revealing the extraordinary possibilities that emerge when technical mastery, creative inquiry and material curiosity come together. You and your practice will be showcasing the strength and diversity of Queensland's craft and design sector. ⁠

Queensland is a Makers' State, so let's make some noise about it.

A national survey of makers and designers is open right now. It is a legacy project from our friends and peers at the Australian Design Centre. This is our moment to speak up. Queensland has one of the most vibrant, diverse craft and design communities in the country - from our regional studios to our First Nations art centres to our city-based designers. But we can only be counted if we're heard.

Every response adds weight to the picture of what our sector looks like, what it needs, and where it's headed. National surveys like this shape policy, funding priorities, and investment decisions for years to come. If Queensland's makers and designers don't respond in numbers, our state's voice risks being underrepresented in a conversation that affects all of us.

This takes just about 10 minutes, but the impact lasts much longer. Whether you're a maker, designer, gallery, art centre, or studio — your voice matters, and we need it in this data.

Have your say. Be counted. Let's make Queensland's makers and designers are heard.
