Did you know there’s a World War II signature wall tucked away in the basement of Brisbane City Hall?

A small section of wall above the old Brisbane urinal became a place for servicemen to leave their names and service numbers during the war.

Among them was Percy Gutteridge, born in 1909, who served during WWII. He signed the wall during the war but didn’t see it again until November 2015, when he was 106 years old.

Another signature belonged to Walter Huggonson. In late 1944, Walter was badly burnt in an accident at his workshop in New Guinea and was sent to Greenslopes Hospital. Unable to return to active service, he was given the task of making artificial limbs for returned soldiers. Using his knowledge as a saddler and bootmaker before the war, he created artificial limbs with timber and strapped to the body with leather. Walter gone on to make artificial limbs for the next 20 years.

❤️ British artist Kirstie Macleod, the creator of The Red Dress project, shares a glimpse into the story of this incredible garment, from the clusters of stars she stitches at each new place the dress visits, to where it’s heading next.

Did you know Brisbane City Hall was once home to an immunisation clinic?

The Sherwood Room at City Hall was used as a community clinic. These photographs from the 1950s offer a glimpse into Brisbane's public health history, showing mothers and babies visiting the clinic for their first jabs.
