🦋 Artist spotlight: Casey Coolwell-Fisher

Today we’re highlighting Casey Coolwell-Fisher’s Ancestral Cousins, showing in Stories You Wear: Magpie Goose.

“This vibrant design celebrates the deep and diverse relationships between Quandamooka people and the animals of land, sea and sky. Featuring Garumun (kangaroo), Buwangun (bottle-nose dolphin), Kabul (carpet snake), Marimari (butterfly), Yalingbila (whale), Bunbiya (turtle), Bombebi (koala), Yuwan (goanna), Mirrigimpa (sea eagle) and Gurrial (curlew), each element reflects the rich biodiversity of my Country and the stories passed down through generations.

For me, creating artwork that features animals is also a way of reviving language and cultural knowledge. Through this design, I share how I have been teaching my young son, Roy, our traditional Jandai language, using the names of animals as a starting point for connection, learning and pride in identity."

Casey Coolwell-Fisher is a Quandamooka Nunukul woman of Minjerribah/Tjerrengarri (North Stradbroke Island). Her bold, contemporary designs draw on traditional patterns and cultural identity, blending modern aesthetics with deep cultural meaning.

This term at Bilingual Storytime, we’re reading The Colours of Home by Sally Soweol Han, a gentle story about a little girl finding connections between two countries through colour.

MoB Artist in Residence Sunday Jemmott chats with The Weekend Edition about her creative practice and her upcoming Museum of Brisbane residency installation, Scribble Sanctuary.

As part of Melt Festival, join Sunday’s drop-in workshops throughout October and November and draw alongside the artist and contribute to the Scribble Sanctuary before it opens in early 2027.

“Everyone has the ability to be expressive, imaginative and creative, it is a main essence of being human.”

Man&Wah are twin brothers and artist duo based in Brisbane. Their artworks are inspired by nature and the cosmos, creating visuals and immersive experiences from a cosmic perspective.

Their creative practice is shaped by time spent in nature, noticing the details around them, from textures and patterns to the subtle movement of trees.

They’re bringing this sense of imagination to their upcoming workshop, Drawing Together, as part of In Residence: Creative Series.
