Flinders University Museum of Art (FUMA) acknowledges the Kaurna people as the traditional custodians of the land on which we work and recognises the ongoing cultural and spiritual significance of this land to the living Kaurna today. FUMA boasts a rich history spanning five decades and collections comprising some 8,000 works. FUAM is committed to preserving and developing the University’s historical and contemporary collections through collection management, research, teaching, publications, exhibitions and public programs. Believing in the power of art to excite and inspire, FUMA aims to stimulate, enrich and engage the communities it serves. FUMA’s holdings include a nationally significant collection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art, with representations from Arnhem Land, the Kimberley, Tiwi Islands, Cape York, Tasmania, Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands as well as from urban and regional centres. An extensive collection of European prints, spanning the 15th to 20th centuries, illustrates a continuous history of European art from the Renaissance through to Modernism. In addition FUAM has a unique and comprehensive collection of Post-object and Documentation art, documenting conceptual art making in the 1960s and 1970s. Smaller collections of Australian art, including works on paper from the colonial period to the present day; Japanese woodblock prints and works by indigenous people of Papua New Guinea, North America and Africa are also represented.

This World Mental Health Day, Saturday 10 October, we invite you to pause, take a breath and spend time with a work of art from the FUMA collection. Through a guided audio tour of 𝘏𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘺 (2011) by Australian abstract artist Ildiko Kovacs, you'll be encouraged to slow down, look closely, and experience the wellbeing benefits of engaging intentionally with art.

𝙆𝙖𝙞𝙩 𝙅𝙖𝙢𝙚𝙨: 𝙍𝙚𝙙 𝙁𝙡𝙖𝙜𝙨 is Wadawarrung artist Kait James’ most ambitious solo exhibition to date. Since 2018, James has been carving out a unique visual language based in the reappropriation of racialised products. Colloquially identified as ‘Aboriginalia’, these mass-produced, commercial objects range from souvenir tea towels and pennant flags to children’s dolls and ceramic figurines. Primarily created from the 1950s through to the 1980s for consumption by non-Indigenous tourists, they depict culturally insensitive and racially stereotyped imagery, designs and motifs.

This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through Creative Australia, its principal arts investment and advisory body, and the Visions of Australia program, and has received development assistance from NETS Victoria’s Exhibition Development Fund, supported by the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria.

One half of 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘉𝘭𝘢𝘬 𝘓𝘢𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘳𝘺, Quandamooka artist Libby Harward yarns with Ali Gumillya Baker about the entrepreneurial idea behind the living artwork. As a functioning laundromat, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘉𝘭𝘢𝘬 𝘓𝘢𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘳𝘺 was devised as a bricks-and-mortar model of mutual aid for First Nations artists.
