CJ’s new work, The Last Age of the Falling Grace, is a meditation on climate emergency refracted through the cyclical energies of humans and non-humans. Presented across three synchronised screens in ACE’s front window, the work will be on view everyday sundown to sunrise until 5 December 2026. ⁠

CJ Taylor: 'The Last Age of the Falling Grace'⁠

CJ Taylor lives and works in bushland on Kaurna/Peramangk country in regional southern Australia where his relationship to the land intimately shapes his visual arts and activist practice. His work pivots around his involvement in biodiversity care for the bushland and its native inhabitants and the questions that occupying that land raises regarding our experience of time, reality, narrative and history in threatened remnant native hinterlands. He engages with the notion of ‘elastic photography’ in the Age of Extinction, where time collapses into a gap opened up at the edge of photomedia and cinema. Crucially his experiences during the Australian Black Summer of 2019/2020 are of primary importance to his work. He has created major projects in Australia, the USA and the Outer Hebrides and Shetland Islands of Scotland working with the Adelaide Civic Collection, South Australian Museum and National Museum of Australia. He holds a PhD from ANU.⁠

‘The Mini-Cine’, Adelaide Contemporary Experimental’s newest experimental project, bringing the magic of moving image to a miniature scale.⁠
⁠
Conceived by artist Sarah Tickle GenderAGender, ‘The Mini-Cine’ is a handcrafted Art Deco picture house installed in ACE’s street-facing stairwell window. Glowing 24/7, it launches with Tickle’s ‘Dear Diary’ (2026), inviting passersby to pause and peer into a tiny cinematic world at any hour.⁠

Now, ACE is inviting South Australian artists to submit moving image works for ‘The Mini-Cine’! Selected works will be exhibited 24 hours a day, seven days a week, from Thursday 5 November – Saturday 5 December 2026. ⁠

'The Mini-Cine': Open Call⁠

ACE is inviting South Australian artists to submit moving image works for The Mini-Cine, our miniature Art Deco picture house designed and built by artist Sarah Tickle and nestled in the gallery's street-facing window.⁠
⁠
Selected work will be exhibited 24 hours a day, seven days a week, Thursday 5 November – Saturday 5 December 2026.⁠
⁠
Artist fee: A loan fee will be provided for the selected work.⁠
⁠
Eligibility: South Australian artists aged 18+ who will have lived in the state for at least 12 months by November 2026.⁠

'The Mini-Cine' marks the beginning of a new experimental platform at ACE, creating further opportunities for moving image works to be presented in an accessible, street-facing format.⁠

Conceived by South Australian artist Sarah Tickle, 'The Mini-Cine' is a meticulously handcrafted model of a glamorous Art Deco picture house. Installed within ACE’s street-facing stairwell window, the tiny cinema glows around the clock, presenting experimental moving image work for passersby to encounter at any hour.⁠

The inaugural work screening inside 'The Mini-Cine' is Tickle’s 'Dear Diary' (2026), a kaleidoscopic video work that brings together intimate, confessional moments through the artist’s distinctive video-mashup style.⁠
⁠
Inspired by the grand picture houses of Hollywood’s Golden Age, the intricate worlds of dioramas and international experiments in miniature cinema, 'The Mini-Cine' transforms ACE’s window into a cinematic universe of its own. The project invites commuters, late-night wanderers, art lovers and curious passersby to pause, peer inside and experience contemporary art beyond traditional gallery hours.⁠

'Future Studios: 2026' presents a group exhibition featuring the creative practices of nine First Nations students from Years 10 to 12. Over the course of an intensive week at ACE, these young artists experienced life as practicing studio artists, developing their skills and ideas in a professional environment. They took part in a diverse range of workshops led by contemporary practitioners Bryce Cawte, Kristal Matthews, Thomas Readett, and Lara Tilbrook. The exhibition explores their approaches to sculpture, painting, ceramics, weaving, and installation.⁠

Featuring works by nine emerging First Nations artists: Mia Smith Ballard, Maeve Bishop, Zerah Coleman, Taylah David-Mabura, Nicole Evans, Joey Karpany, Kyrell Miller, Kirene Newchurch, and Tyra Wakfield.⁠
⁠
Through this program, participants built an understanding of studio-based practice and the day-to-day realities of working as an artist. They collaborated with one another, alongside established and emerging creatives, within ACE’s professional studio setting, a leading independent hub for contemporary visual art in South Australia.⁠

Pods are a holding vessel for the seeds within, a space of nurturing and protection for potential life. In this workshop, we will pay close attention to the form, appearance and materiality of seeds, transforming this witnessing into individual drawings.⁠
