The mumok is the largest museum in Central Europe for art since modernism. It makes the various aspects of the international and Austrian avant-garde accessible to everyone interested in the arts. The striking dark grey cuboid structure clad in basalt stone houses an unusual collection featuring important works from Classic Modernism, Pop Art, Fluxus, and Viennese Actionism to present-day film and media art. mumok sees itself as a place for lively exploration of modern and contemporary art. This is art that gets involved and points out the ruptures and transformations in our society, that undermines tried and tested rituals, that makes us more sensitive and expands our imagination, that facilitates new ways of seeing.

When speaking about her installation ‚Terminal Piece‘ (1972), Kate Millett suggested that she had to make it because she could not write it.

‚Terminal Piece’ shows a female mannequin sitting alone behind wooden bars among two rows of empty chairs, facing the audience. Resembling both stage and cage, this setup subverts how viewers are conventionally positioned within the museum: who takes on the role of the spectator and the spectated is left ambiguous.

Millett’s ‚Terminal Piece’ serves as the eponymous exhibition’s point of departure, while setting the tone for mumok‘s new program.

Laut Künstlerin und Autorin Kate Millett musste ihr Werk ‚Terminal Piece‘ (1972) als Kunstwerk realisiert werden, da es nicht geschrieben werden konnte.

‚Terminal Piece’ zeigt ein einzelnes weibliches Mannequin, das auf einem der zweireihig angeordneten Klappstühle sitzt und dem Publikum, durch eine Reihe von Holzbalken getrennt, entgegenblickt. Sowohl einer Bühne, als auch einem Käfig ähnelnd, stellt die Konstellation herkömmliche Betrachtungsweisen im Museum auf die Probe: wer Beobachter*in ist und wer beobachtet wird, bleibt offen.

Milletts ‚Terminal Piece‘ ist der konzeptionelle Ausgangspunkt der gleichnamigen Ausstellung und eröffnet zugleich das neue Programm des mumok.

'pass it on' is an evening of performative readings and actions conceived by the students of the Studio for Art and Time at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and Danish artist Elisabeth Molin:

Following Molin’s artistic practice, the event will explore trust as the foundation for functional interpersonal relationships through a variety of collaborations between artist, audience and students. Through practicing and listening through and with each other, the evening becomes an opportunity for collective experience.

Ausgehend von Molins künstlerischer Praxis untersucht die Veranstaltung Vertrauen als Grundlage funktionierender zwischenmenschlicher Beziehungen durch eine Kette an Kollaborationen zwischen Künstlerin, Publikum und Studierenden. Durch gemeinsame Praxis und Zuhören wird der Abend zur kollektiven Erfahrung.

Artist Veronica Brovall invites participants to experiment with plaster molds. We will work with leaves, rope, insects, bark, feathers, and clay to create impressions and traces. What remains may become part of the installation in progress or be returned to the clay.

A fragment from ‘GIRL’, an artist monograph by Marietta Mavrokordatou, serves as the point of departure for an evening of conversation and reflection unfolding through literary, visual, and material references.

In ‘GIRL’, Mavrokordatou explores the space between the physical self and its psychic projection through photography. From this starting point, the reading opens onto questions of physical and mental interiors, and the impossibility of ever fully inhabiting the rooms of childhood.

An evening conceived by students of TransArts, a class at the University of Applied Arts, together with curators Leon Hösl and Magdalena Stöger.

Ein Auszug aus ‚GIRL‘, einer Künstlermonografie von Marietta Mavrokordatou, dient als gemeinsamer Bezugspunkt für einen Abend des Austauschs und der Reflexion. In ‚GIRL‘ untersucht Mavrokordatou mithilfe von Fotografie den Raum zwischen dem physischen Selbst und seiner psychischen Projektion.

Davon ausgehend eröffnet die Lesung Fragen nach dem körperlichen und mentalen Inneren sowie nach der Unmöglichkeit, die Räume der Kindheit jemals vollständig zu bewohnen – entlang weiterer literarischer, visueller und materieller Bezüge.

Konzipiert von Studierenden des Studiengangs TransArts an der Universität für angewandte Kunst Wien gemeinsam mit den Kurator*innen Leon Hösl und Magdalena Stöger.

‘Figure of the Child’ by Tolia Astakhishvili is an inaugural exhibition of mumok’s new program:

Figure of the Child is Tolia Astakhishvili’s first solo museum exhibition. Realized in situ, the exhibition profoundly transforms mumok’s spaces and procedures, bridging the rhythms of everyday life with the temporality of exhibition-making. In the process, Astakhishvili draws on the titular “figure of the child.” For the artist, this figure encompasses the intellectual and creative autonomy of children, but also their dependency and vulnerability. Beginning from this tension, the exhibition explores the possibilities and limits of empathy.

Tolia Astakhishvili (born 1974 in Tbilisi, Georgia) lives and works in Berlin and Tbilisi.

‚Figure of the Child‘ von Tolia Astakhishvili ist eine Eröffnungsausstellung des neuen mumok Programms:

Die Ausstellung 'Figure of the Child' ist Tolia Astakhishvilis erste museale Einzelausstellung. Vor Ort realisiert, transformiert sie die Räume und Abläufe des mumok grundlegend und verknüpft die Rhythmen des Alltags mit der Zeitlichkeit des Ausstellungsmachens. Dabei greift Astakhishvili auf die titelgebende 'Figur des Kindes' zurück. Für die Künstlerin umfasst diese Figur sowohl die intellektuelle und kreative Autonomie von Kindern als auch ihre Abhängigkeit und Verletzlichkeit. Ausgehend von dieser Spannung untersucht die Ausstellung die Möglichkeiten und Grenzen von Empathie.

Tolia Astakhishvili (* 1974, Tiflis, Georgien) lebt und arbeitet in Berlin und Tiflis.
