Knowledge has a home in Braamfontein. Surrounded by institutions of learning and thousands of students, The Pen of Knowledge sculpture at the corner of Biccard and Leyds Streets perfectly captures the spirit of the district — a proud reminder of the importance of knowledge and education. 💡📖
The sculpture was created by architect Sibusiso Mthembu and furniture designer and woodworker Sabelo Mthembu as part of the Johannesburg Development Agency's investment in public art. Inspired by the idea that “the pen is mightier than the sword,” the brothers designed the artwork to symbolise knowledge and education.
Its location, close to Park Station and surrounded by Braamfontein's educational institutions, adds another layer to its meaning. The Pen of Knowledge stands as a powerful reminder that knowledge and education are important drivers of opportunity, growth and human progress
