Knowledge has a home in Braamfontein. Surrounded by institutions of learning and thousands of students, The Pen of Knowledge sculpture at the corner of Biccard and Leyds Streets perfectly captures the spirit of the district — a proud reminder of the importance of knowledge and education. 💡📖

The sculpture was created by architect Sibusiso Mthembu and furniture designer and woodworker Sabelo Mthembu as part of the Johannesburg Development Agency's investment in public art. Inspired by the idea that “the pen is mightier than the sword,” the brothers designed the artwork to symbolise knowledge and education.

Its location, close to Park Station and surrounded by Braamfontein's educational institutions, adds another layer to its meaning. The Pen of Knowledge stands as a powerful reminder that knowledge and education are important drivers of opportunity, growth and human progress

Welcome to Braamfontein — where the history is all around us. ⛏

Johannesburg’s story is deeply connected to gold. Following the discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand in 1886, the city grew rapidly, transforming from a mining settlement into the Johannesburg we know today.

But behind the growth, wealth and development was the labour of thousands of miners — Black and white — who worked in harsh and often dangerous conditions to build a life and contribute to a city that was still finding its identity.

Standing proudly in our city is the Miners’ Monument a tribute to those workers and a reminder of the human story behind Johannesburg’s mining history. The three miners represented in the monument face towards Langlaagte, where the Main Reef was discovered in 1886. Their presence reminds us that the foundations of this City were not built by gold alone but by the hands, resilience and sacrifice of the people who worked beneath the ground.

As we welcome you to Braamfontein, we invite you to look beyond the street, building and business and discover the stories that have shaped the precinct and the city around it. _ there's history all around us. 👀

If the streets of Braam could talk, the stories they would tell would be endless.

Instead, its people have chosen to tell them.

Across Braamfontein, walls have become canvases, transforming ordinary spaces into powerful expressions of identity, culture and creativity. Every mural offers a glimpse into the minds of the artists behind it—people with stories to tell, perspectives to share, and the courage to think beyond the ordinary.

They're not statistics or numbers. They're creatives, dreamers and visionaries leaving their mark on the city they call home.

The next time you're in Braamfontein, slow down. Take a walk, look around you, and immerse yourself in the art that surrounds you. Admire it. Appreciate it. You might just find a piece of yourself reflected in the stories painted on these walls.

See you on Friday!!!!!
