Robben Island Museum Robben Island Museum (RIM), a unique symbol of "the triumph of the human spirit over adversity, suffering and injustice".

RIM is responsible for managing and maintaining the assets of the Island. These include the Maximum and Medium Security Prison Complexes, Robert Sobukwe’s House, the Curio and Village Shops, the Village Precinct and associated recreational facilities, the Helipad and runway on the Island, World War II memorials, power generation and water processing plants, Jetty 1 and the Nelson Mandela Gateway a

NATIONAL YOUTH HERITAGE CAMP

The National Youth Heritage Camp continues to provide a powerful platform for young South Africans to engage with history, leadership, and active citizenship.

Day 1 began with the arrival and welcoming of participants from six provinces. Youth uprising veteran Bab' Seth Mazibuko set the tone by sharing the significance of 13 June, reflecting on the election of six leaders who helped advance the struggle for freedom. Inspired by this legacy, participants elected a committee of 10 young leaders who will carry forward the aspirations and concerns of their generation throughout the camp.

The day concluded with vibrant cultural activities that celebrated South Africa's rich diversity, heritage, and unity.

On Day 2, learners came together in mixed groups, transcending provincial boundaries to engage in meaningful dialogue and shared learning. Participants presented their reflections on Bab' Seth Mazibuko's keynote address, exploring the enduring relevance of the 1976 Youth Uprising, the importance of active citizenship, and the role of young people in shaping South Africa's future.

Through these discussions, young leaders are building lasting connections, fostering unity, and deepening their understanding of our shared heritage and history. Together, they are honouring the past while preparing to lead the future.

Robben Island Museum was proud to be part of the Home Races Marathon Expo, standing alongside fellow TSEC entities to celebrate the power of sports, arts, and culture.

Our team engaged with runners and their families, sharing the rich history of Robben Island and encouraging visitors to explore one of South Africa’s most iconic heritage sites. We also promoted our upcoming Memorial Run in December, an event that honours resilience, remembrance, and the enduring legacy of those who shaped our nation’s history.

It was a great privilege to welcome former former and distinguished public servant, Ebrahim Patel, to Robben Island this weekend.

His visit provided a meaningful opportunity to on our country’s journey, engage with important conversations about our history, and learn from the experiences and perspectives he shared. One of the highlights of the visit was seeing him spend time with former prisoners whose lives and sacrifices form an important part of the Island’s legacy.

Walking through this historic site together served as a powerful reminder of the resilience, courage, and determination that helped shape the we know today.

We are grateful for the opportunity to host visitors who continue to value and preserve the stories of those who fought for freedom. These encounters help ensure that the lessons of our past remain relevant for future generations.

Robben Island Museum proudly congratulates Mr Dede Ntsoelengoe, former political prisoner, freedom fighter, colleague, and participant in the 1976 student uprising, on the publication of his book, Locked In, Rising Still.

As South Africa marks 50 years since the events of 1976, Mr Ntsoelengoe's story stands as a powerful reminder of the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of a generation that helped shape our democracy.
