The Robben Island Museum Outreach Programme continues to make an impact across all nine provinces of South Africa, bringing the stories and legacy of Robben Island closer to communities and learners who are unable to visit the Island due to socio-economic and political challenges.

Currently in KwaZulu-Natal, within the uMgungundlovu District in Pietermaritzburg, the programme is reaching rural communities and creating inclusive access to the multiple-layered history of Robben Island.

Former political prisoner accompanies the outreach, Mr Sibusiso Mkhize, a son of Pietermaritzburg who spent years imprisoned on Robben Island. His personal testimony allows learners to engage directly with living history, encouraging critical thinking, deeper understanding, and meaningful curriculum enrichment.
