Robben Island Museum (RIM), a unique symbol of "the triumph of the human spirit over adversity, suffering and injustice".

RIM is responsible for managing and maintaining the assets of the Island. These include the Maximum and Medium Security Prison Complexes, Robert Sobukwe’s House, the Curio and Village Shops, the Village Precinct and associated recreational facilities, the Helipad and runway on the Island, World War II memorials, power generation and water processing plants, Jetty 1 and the Nelson Mandela Gateway at the V & A Waterfront, the Mayibuye Archives, the three (3) ferries that transport people to the Island and the fleet of buses used by tourists on the Island.

The Robben Island Museum Spring School Programme 2026 is currently underway, bringing young people together from 25 September – 4 October 2026 under the theme “Restoring Dignity Through Agriculture, Media & Digitalization.”

The programme creates a space for learning, heritage engagement, environmental awareness, leadership and creative exploration, connecting young people with meaningful conversations and experiences that inspire a more sustainable and dignified future.

Today we remember Chief Jongumsobomvu Maqoma who was born in 1798 from the right house of King Ngqika of the Rharhabe people. Maqoma fought a number of wars on especially around the Hogsback mountains with a military prowess that fascinated and frustrated the British. He was arrested during his anti-cattle killing campaign in 1857 in the Eastern Cape. Maqoma was tried and sentenced to Robben Island and his great wife Katyi decided to join her husband as he served his sentence.

Maqoma was released after 12 years in 1869. After his release he stayed in Fort Beaufort and tried to reclaim the land he lost while he was imprisoned. In 1871 he was tried and sentenced for trespassing. He was sent to Robben Island for the second time, now without his wife. In 1873 on 9 September he died under mysterious circumstances on the island.

🕊️ IN MEMORY OF COMRADE GENEVA MORAKE

Robben Island Museum mourns the passing of Comrade Philemon “Geneva” Modisagarekwe Morake, an Ex-Political Prisoner whose life and legacy remain part of the living history of Robben Island.

Beyond his experience as a political prisoner, Comrade Morake was an artist and custodian of memory. Through his stories, artistic expression and contribution to preserving the experiences of former political prisoners, he helped ensure that the history of Robben Island would continue to speak to generations to come.

His journey may have come to an end, but the memories he helped preserve will endure.

From Paramedic Intern to Paramedic 👩🏽‍🚒🚑✨

In 2022, joining Robben Island Museum as a Paramedic Intern marked the beginning of a journey of growth, learning and professional development.

Through the RIM Graduate Programme, valuable workplace experience opened the door to new opportunities. After successfully completing the internship, Chuma was appointed as a Paramedic.

He’s journey is a powerful reminder of what can happen when young graduates are given an opportunity to learn, grow and build their careers. We are proud to have played a part in his journey and remain committed to investing in young talent. 🫱🏾‍🫲🏽

We congratulate him on this achievement and look forward to seeing him continue to serve with dedication, professionalism and excellence. 👏🏽
