SEASON 1 FINALE EPISODE 9 : THE HAARLEM | THE CAPE THE GENESIS OF A PEOPLE | Dr Bruno Werz , FSA.

In this episode of The Southern Question, Jolene sits down with renowned maritime archaeologist Dr Bruno Werz, FSA, to explore one of the most overlooked turning points in South African history: the wreck of the Haarlem in Table Bay, and its profound connection to the origins of the Cape Coloured community.

But before the conversation even reaches the Haarlem, the episode opens with a haunting question:

What lies buried beneath Cape Town itself?

Beneath the Castle of Good Hope.
Beneath the Grand Parade.
Beneath the Golden Acre.

Through archaeology, archival records, and forgotten histories, Dr Werz takes us beneath the modern city and into the layered worlds hidden below its streets — shipwrecks, burial grounds, trade routes, lost shorelines, and the earliest encounters between Indigenous communities and European arrivals.

Part historical investigation, this episode traces how a single shipwreck became a civilisational pivot point anchored in Table Bay.

Together, Jolene and Dr Werz unpack:
* The Haarlem shipwreck and why it changed the Dutch imagination of the Cape
* The early encounters between the VOC, the Khoekhoe, and the San
* The lives of key historical figures such as Autshumao, Krotoa, and Doman
* How handwritten journals catalogued Indigenous people and landscapes
* The VOC as a corporate machine with military permission
* The hidden role of interpreters as translators, negotiators, and intelligence channels
* The origins of Afrikaans and Kaaps within the Cape contact zone
* Slavery, encounter, coercion, and the formation of a new people at the Cape
* Why South Africa’s changing history curriculum makes this conversation so urgent today

The episode also explores Dr Werz’s remarkable career as a maritime archaeologist, his excavations around the Cape coastline, and his published work documenting shipwrecks and submerged histories connected to South Africa’s past.

Most powerfully, this conversation asks:

Who gets remembered in history… and who gets rewritten?

As South Africa reconsiders how its history is taught, this episode becomes more than a discussion about the past. It becomes a conversation about narrative, identity, memory, and responsibility.

We’ve named Autshumao, Krotoa, and Doman… but who have we forgotten — and how do we honour them as South Africa rewrites its history? https://youtu.be/m0i_bhsKoq8
