THK Gallery THK Gallery is a dynamic contemporary art gallery situated in the heart of Cape Town, South Africa.

THK Gallery was founded by German photographer and collector Frank Schรถnau in 2018, who was joined by auction veteran Linda Pyke in 2020. Working with established and emerging artists from Africa and the diaspora, as well as international artists, the gallery presents a diverse array of developing contemporary visual art forms. It contributes to the contemporary art discourse by showcasing, to a global audience, art that presents alternative perspectives and aesthetics to the status quo, in order to create new ways of seeing and thinking.

This week at THK:

The File Cannot be Restored continues at our Cape Town gallery, while our team heads to Bavaria for ART & DESIGN Tegernsee (Kunst & Design Messe).

Set on Gut Kaltenbrunn, with lake Tegernsee and the Alpine as a backdrop, it is one of the most charming fairs in Germany. Here we are presenting works by , Oda Tungodden, Karla Nixon , Abdus Salaam, Marco Zumbรฉ, Thomas Wachholz and Philip Emde.

Bringing together emerging and established artists exploring the possibilities of material,๐˜”๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜บ considered how the things we make with, live with and discard can speak to much larger questions.

BEHIND THE WORK: ๐˜Ž๐˜ช๐˜ณ๐˜ญ ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜—๐˜ช๐˜จโ€” Tshepiso Moropa

โ€œDitoro explores the space between dreaming and remembering. Drawing from personal and family archives, I use collage to construct dreamlike worlds where fragments of photographs, figures, landscapes and animals come together in unexpected ways.
The works are informed by Setswana understandings of dreams, folklore and storytelling, where the boundary between the imagined and the lived can become fluid.
Rather than treating dreams as purely personal or imaginary, I see them as spaces of possibility, places where memories can be revisited, transformed and reimagined.
Through collage, I create new narratives from these fragments, allowing the past and present to exist together and asking what other ways of seeing ourselves, our histories and our futures might emerge.โ€

For Sahlah Davids, the meticulous process of making is deeply connected to ritual and inherited gestures.

โ€œA lot of people say [meticulous] to me, but often it feels quite emotive. Thereโ€™s this kind of innate practiceโ€ฆ itโ€™s quite a ritual, you know, watching my grandmother and my grandfatherโ€ฆ the way they would nip and tuck and how they would do things, even though I had no understanding of what they were doing, it was innate, kind of, this practice. And similarly, the way I kind of bead things together, itโ€™s that kind of motion.โ€

Here, Davids reflects on how these early observations continue to shape the physical and emotional rhythm of her practice.
