ARTISTS IN PRACTICE | LEANDRI ERLANK

One strand of hair. Thousands of marks. An ongoing conversation between the body, memory and material.

For the latest edition of Artists in Practice: A Day in the Studio, we visit Leandri Erlank at SideTrack Studios in Salt River, Cape Town.

Working with a single strand of her own hair, Leandri builds intricate compositions through repetition, allowing each mark to become a record of movement, time and memory.

We step inside her studio to talk about the physical demands of her process, productive daydreaming, the freedom of working intuitively, and life alongside Django, her ever-present shadow dog.

“I feel like I came back to myself after many years of trying to be someone else.”

We are now accepting submissions from artists working in every medium.

Submit between 3 and 10 works for consideration. GOT. | Summer 26 is fully digital, with the exhibition running from mid to end November 2026.

Works only need to be delivered if sold. We rely on the photography submitted with your application.
Applications close 22 October 2026.

Selections will be announced by 26 October 2026.

Cape Town based artist Karen Stewart works across paint, paper and clay. In these works, geometric forms, blocks of colour and shifting spatial relationships are composed on plywood, reflecting her broader interest in reshaping and reassembling materials into new configurations.

A familiar artist in an unexpected place.

During a recent stay at Canopy by Hilton in Cape Town, we recognised Sitaara Stodel’s collage imagery on the bed’s canopy.

Working with found family photographs, Sitaara pieces together houses, rooms and gardens, exploring home, memory and belonging. Seeing those imagined spaces become part of a room we were temporarily calling home felt particularly fitting.

Having worked with Sitaara before, we took the encounter as a reason to revisit her practice: from photographs on the studio table to the hotel collaboration and works from THEFOURTH’s archive.

GENERATED LIGHT
“The light emanates from within. It’s not reflected, it’s generated.”
In these works, light is not simply depicted. It becomes part of the object itself.
Neon cuts through painted surfaces, placing artificial illumination beside botanical imagery and holding the natural and synthetic in the same frame.
The result is both seductive and unstable: painting becomes something closer to an encounter.

“My personal shift moving between urban and nature, from work to escape.”

Escapism has been an ongoing thread through Elmarie van Straten’s practice.

Trees, horizons, skies and distant landscapes suggest somewhere to go, but colour unsettles the promise of refuge. The familiar remains present, yet never entirely secure.

These are landscapes of escape, but not necessarily of arrival.

A closer look at the work of Jeanne Hugo.

Cape Town based artist Jeanne Hugo works primarily with botanical and acrylic inks on raw silk. Her practice draws on nature, memory and symbolism, balancing fluid, expansive gestures with finely rendered forms to explore ideas of growth, transformation and metamorphosis.

THE GARDEN

“They are often the most beautiful, the most lush, the most seductive.”

Thorns, leaves, berries and flowering forms fill the frame, drawing the viewer close. Elmarie van Straten’s interest in toxic and invasive plants lies in their contradiction: that what appears most beautiful or abundant can also carry harm.

Nothing here announces itself as dangerous. That is precisely where the tension sits.
