VALE DAVID BECKER โ A PHOTOGRAPHER WHO HELPED PRESERVE OUR STORIES
The Vanuatu Cultural Centre extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of David Becker, whose long relationship with Vanuatu and the people of our islands left an important photographic legacy.
For decades, David Becker travelled throughout Melanesia, with a particularly deep connection to Vanuatu and the island of Tanna. His relationship with Vanuatu was not simply that of a photographer visiting a distant place. Through his work, friendships and long-term engagement with communities, he became deeply interested in documenting customary life, people, traditions and the everyday realities of island communities.
One of the important chapters of his connection with Vanuatu began around 1990, when the Vanuatu Cultural Centre sent David to Tanna to photograph traditional life. It was there that he met Bosen Napu, a Vanuatu Cultural Centre fieldworker from Tanna. Their friendship became an important part of David's life and work.
David later shared his knowledge of photography with Bosen, helping him develop photographic skills so that the documentation of Tanna and its people could continue through the eyes of someone from the community itself. This reflects an important principle of cultural documentation: our stories are strongest when our own people are able to record, interpret and preserve them.
David's photographs form part of a wider history of photographic documentation of Vanuatu and Melanesia. His work captured people, customary practices, landscapes, clothing, ceremonies and everyday life at a time of significant change across the Pacific.
The contribution of photographers such as David Becker reminds us of the importance of the National Film, Sound and Photo Archive of the Vanuatu Cultural Centre, whose role is to collect, preserve and promote Vanuatu's cultural heritage through photographs, film and sound for present and future generations.
Photography is more than an image. It can become a record of a person, a family, a community, a ceremony, a place and a way of life. When carefully preserved, photographs become part of the historical memory of a nation.
We acknowledge David Becker's contribution to documenting Vanuatu and the relationships he built with our people, particularly through his longstanding connection with Tanna.
May his photographs continue to speak to future generations about the people and cultures of Vanuatu.
