Ancient fragments of pottery have been discovered in excavations for Tonga's new parliament complex.

Lapita pottery has been associated with some of the earliest settlements across the Pacific. The fragments found date back to around 2,500 years ago.

The government hasn't released details on how many fragments were found, or whether they've undergone archaeological assessment yet.
