Today makes the anniversary of the passing of First Lady Pat Nixon. Throughout her life, she often said “people are my project,” and that was clear through her life work.

In his tribute to Pat, Richard Nixon said “When you think of Pat, I hope you will always remember—the sunshine of her smile. She would like that.”

On this day in 1940, Richard Nixon married Pat Ryan at the Mission Inn in Riverside, California. He wrote her in a letter earlier that year, “And Dear One, though the years, whatever happens I shall always be with you — loving you more every hour and and attempting to let you feel that love in your heart and life.”

On June 14, 1777, the United States adopted its flag by a resolution of the Second Continental Congress. In honor of Flag Day, we are highlighting a special artifact on display at the Nixon Library: a flag created by Colonel John A. Dramesi which he made in capitivity as an American Prisoner of War in Vietnam.

Dramesi was a POW in North Vietnam for over 5 years. During this time he created a flag using scraps of materials provided by other POWs in an effort to elevate the morale of his fellow prisoners with the symbol of American patriotism. For over a year the flag was displayed in the evenings and saluted by the imprisoned Americans. It flew all night. Before the guards arrived each morning it was again saluted.

Upon his release, Dramesi smuggled the flag out of the camp by sewing it between two handkerchiefs.

The Dramesi Flag was displayed at the White House POW dinner on May 24, 1973, and was presented to President Nixon by Colonel Dramesi the following day in the Oval Office.

The Richard Nixon Foundation

The mission of The Richard Nixon Foundation was first articulated by President Nixon:

To further this mission, the Richard Nixon Foundation in association with the National Archives and Records Administration provides financial support to collect, preserve, and make available to the public and for scholars the documents, recordings, and other materials that illuminate the life and times, and the historic legacy of Richard Nixon.

The Richard Nixon Foundation actively encourages and supports scholarship and sponsors programs that engage the public with the Library, promotes educational programs and exhibits, and fosters discussion and debate relating to the legacy of America’s thirty-seventh President.
