September 23 marks the anniversary of one of the most consequential and precedent-setting speeches in U.S. history: Richard Nixon’s much-famed Checkers Speech. In this speech, RN addressed allegations of a "secret fund" that he used for his own personal use by speaking to the American people directly and laying out all of his and Mrs. Nixon's personal finances.

In his first book "Six Crises", RN refers to the event as ‘The Fund’ Crisis, but the television address is commonly known as the “Checkers” speech because of the reference to the Cocker Spaniel his daughters received as a gift: “you know, the kids, like all kids, loved the dog,” he said, “and I just want to say this, right now, that regardless of what they say about it, we’re going to keep it.”

The personal note — in the face of baseless attacks from opponents – proved powerfully touching to the 60 millions of Americans watching, the largest television audience of the time.

Nixon Biographer Jonathan Aitken returned to Yorba Linda yesterday to share new Nixon stories and reflections gleaned from writing his book "Nixon: A Life", first published in 1993.

During his talk at the Nixon Library, Aitken shared never heard before stories including personal anecdotes like being President Nixon’s guest at a performance of his favorite musical, Carousel, and multiple examples of the former President’s “gift for international predictions.”

Did you know? Richard Nixon and Franklin D. Roosevelt hold a unique record in American history.

They are the only two individuals to appear on a national presidential ticket FIVE times.

Nixon was elected Vice President in 1952 and 1956, was narrowly defeated by JFK in 1960, and then returned to win the Presidency in 1968 and 1972 (recreated here at the Nixon Library).

08/03/2023

During the summer of 1948, Congressman Richard Nixon was working as a member of the Committee on Un-American Activities, working to expose Soviet spies in the U.S. government. The investigation would lead them to Whittaker Chambers, a former Communist functionary in the 1930s who left the party and eventually became a well-respected and venerable senior editor for Time Magazine.

In his testimony on August 3, 1948 - 75 years ago today - Chambers described his involvement with Communism, his growing disillusionment with Stalinism, and his eventual break with the party. As he summed up his previous Communist activities, Chambers emphasized that his group’s primary objective was to infiltrate the government and that among them was Alger Hiss.

Follow along this month to learn more about this historic case.

The Richard Nixon Foundation

The mission of The Richard Nixon Foundation was first articulated by President Nixon:

To further this mission, the Richard Nixon Foundation in association with the National Archives and Records Administration provides financial support to collect, preserve, and make available to the public and for scholars the documents, recordings, and other materials that illuminate the life and times, and the historic legacy of Richard Nixon.

The Richard Nixon Foundation actively encourages and supports scholarship and sponsors programs that engage the public with the Library, promotes educational programs and exhibits, and fosters discussion and debate relating to the legacy of America’s thirty-seventh President.
