You cannot see Becoming Shadow all at once.

Three distinct video channels unfold continuously across three walls. While you watch one, the others continue beyond your field of vision. One soundtrack holds the room together.

Liverpool-based video performance artist Lorna Moore builds movement from still photographs of her own body. The figure hesitates, fragments, disappears and reforms. Shadow becomes presence. Repetition changes what you think you have already seen.

This is not a screening. It is a work you enter.

At Colloquia, we have always believed that access to art means more than simply opening the door. It means making the gallery a place where people feel free to look closely, ask questions, disagree, change their minds, and discover that there is no single correct way to encounter a work of art.

That idea sits at the heart of the second installment in the Anxious Alan series, Anxious Alan and the Great Gallery Adventure. This time, Alan and Sloane find their way into the National Gallery of Art, encounter extraordinary works, and return home inspired to create a gallery of their own, where every creature brings something only they could make.

It is a children’s story, but it also extends something central to the mission of Colloquia: making art feel less like a test of what you know and more like an invitation to look, think, make, disagree, and belong.

New in Colloquies: The Unequal Freedom to Make.

We often talk about access to art as though an open door were enough. But the freedom to make depends on far more than admission. It depends on time, space, materials, education, confidence, safety, and the belief that creative life is meant for you.

This essay grows from our wider Ars Est Sanitas inquiry into art, health, and human capability. If making can support attention, agency, emotional regulation, meaning, identity, and connection, then unequal access to the conditions that make it possible is more than a cultural problem. It is a question of who gets the practical freedom to create.

Thrilled to announce Camilla Fasolino and Hayes Conradi Koppelman as the artists selected for Colloquia Futures 2027.

I am equally excited about what comes next. Over the coming year, we will work closely together to develop the work, test ideas, shape installation, refine language, and build two exhibitions that are ambitious, coherent, and true to each artist’s practice.

I want to share that process as it unfolds. Futures is not simply about presenting finished work. It is about what can happen when early-career artists are given serious curatorial attention, professional support, and the space to push their practice further.

Camilla’s While We Are Here and Hayes’s In the Wind I Once Knew already open a compelling conversation around presence, intimacy, distance, materiality, and what human connection leaves behind.

Over the next year, I will share the progress, decisions, revisions, and discoveries that shape these exhibitions as we work toward something genuinely significant for both artists.

We have never watched so much video, yet we may rarely have given moving images so little time.

Our new Colloquies essay, When the Image Takes Time, considers what changes when an artwork unfolds rather than presents itself all at once. Time-based art asks viewers to enter somewhere within a sequence, accept partial knowledge, orient their bodies within a changing field, and remain long enough for recurrence, sound, and movement to alter perception.

The essay appears ahead of Lorna Moore: Becoming Shadow, opening at Colloquia on September 12. Across three projected walls, distinct looping images are held together by a single sound field, offering a concentrated example of how duration can become artistic material without becoming spectacle.

PIETER GREEFF: RECENT ABSTRACTS

On Saturday, August 8, Colloquia will present a special pop-up exhibition of recent abstract paintings by Pieter Greeff, an artist of longstanding achievement who has called this region home for many decades.

Greeff’s practice has developed across a lifetime of looking, drawing, and painting. In these recent works, that history finds fresh expression through bright color, geometric form, and an invigorating sense of movement and balance. Their chromatic confidence may recall aspects of Color School painting, but the language is distinctly Greeff’s own: direct, animated, and alive with the possibilities of paint.

Presented as a concentrated selection, the exhibition offers an unusually clear view of an important evolution within his practice. The works gain energy from one another, revealing variations in color, structure, rhythm, and spatial tension that become more apparent through sustained looking.

We are proud to present this meaningful body of recent work and grateful for the opportunity to provide the time and space for others to encounter it. There is particular pleasure in sharing the continuing work of an accomplished artist who has been part of this region for so many years.

To anyone who still believes there is no serious contemporary art scene in the Washington region, this wall offers a fairly decisive rebuttal. Tomorrow the Sun Will Rise, The Phillips Collection’s new juried exhibition, brings together 48 superb artists selected from nearly 1,500 applications.

Taken together, the work demonstrates far more than talent in the aggregate. It reveals an established artistic community with its own histories, debates, institutions, relationships, and momentum: a culture with a past, a present, and a future. Washington is not waiting for an art world to arrive. It is already here.

The Phillips Collection deserves real credit for the vision behind this exhibition and for using its platform to make the breadth of the region visible. The opening provided an especially rare pleasure, with so many of the artists present alongside their work, allowing visitors to encounter not only the finished objects but also the people, practices, and community that animate them.

This is what a cultural institution can do at its best: not invent a scene, but recognize one, gather it, and help the rest of us see it more clearly.

Has specialization become so closely associated with seriousness that openness now looks suspect?

In the latest Colloquies essay, “The Discipline of Being Undisciplined,” we consider what might be gained when galleries resist being defined by a single era, medium, geography, or movement. Breadth need not be the opposite of rigor, and surprise, when supported by judgment and care, may be one of the most meaningful things a cultural institution can offer.

Perhaps the measure of a gallery is not whether visitors find precisely what they expected, but whether they leave more capable of seeing than when they arrived.

“It’s not a judgy space.”

That idea sits at the heart of Colloquia Art.

We created the gallery not simply as a place to display contemporary fine art, but as a place where people can slow down, connect, exchange ideas, and encounter something unexpected. No expertise required. No pressure to have the “right” interpretation. Just curiosity.

We’re grateful to Ashley Miller and The Northern Virginia Daily for sharing the story of how Colloquia came to life, why Woodstock felt like the right home, and why our local community remains at the center of everything we do.

As I say in the article, claiming you don’t have time for art can feel a little like saying you don’t have time for a sunrise.

Come in. Stay awhile. Be as human as you want to be.
