“Between the River and the Road" reflects exactly what we want Diggs Gallery to be, a place where art opens the door to meaningful conversations about who we are, where we have been and what we carry forward,” said Dianne Pledger, Director of Diggs Gallery. “Clarence Heyward and Stephen Hayes offer distinct yet complementary perspectives on Black life, memory and identity. Their work asks us not simply to observe history, but to consider how history continues to live within our families, communities and everyday experiences. We are excited to welcome them to Diggs and to share this important exhibition with our students, the Winston-Salem community and visitors throughout the region.”

🎉 HAPPY 36TH ANNIVERSARY, DIGGS GALLERY! 🎨

Today, October 2, we celebrate 36 years of art, legacy, culture and community at Diggs Gallery at Winston-Salem State University!

Since opening its doors on October 2, 1990, Diggs Gallery has served as an important cultural center celebrating the artistic expressions and stories of Africa, the African Diaspora and African American experience.

After a five-year closure, Diggs Gallery proudly reopened its doors in March 2026, beginning an exciting new chapter—one that honors our distinguished past while embracing a bold vision for the future.

Today, we celebrate the legacy of James Thackeray “T” Diggs, Jr., the artists whose works have enriched our Gallery, our students and faculty, and the patrons, supporters and community members who continue to believe in the transformative power of art.

❤️ 36 years strong—and our next chapter has only just begun.

Diggs Gallery is open. The legacy continues. The future is being reimagined.

Happy Birthday, Diggs Gallery! 🎂🎨
