LIMITED SPACE STILL AVAILABLE
In this workshop participants, age 16+ will use needle and thread to create a scrappy mini quilt. You will learn how to use your fabric stash to put together a complete art project in a few hours start to finish. We’ll brainstorm designs to create together, make our own patterns and hand-sew art quilt projects. We’ll talk about composition and color, and each participant will design an
8 x 10 art quilt that can be framed.

This is a 2.5-hour class. No experience is necessary. Please bring scrap fabric and sharp scissors. Some fabric will be provided. Needles and thread will be provided. Kimberley’s work has been featured in Quiltfolk and Quilting Arts international magazines.

Visit Diggs Gallery for "Before I Go" Quilts & Clay by Kimberley Pierce Cartwright August 17- October 3.

African American quiltmaking originated from West African textile traditions and evolved in the United States as a vital form of cultural expression, storytelling, and survival during slavery.

African Roots and Early Influences
African American quiltmaking traces its origins to West and Central African textile traditions, including the Mande, Yoruba, Fon, Ejagham, Kongo, Asante, and Ewe peoples. In West Africa, intricate woven cloths such as Nsaduaso and Kente were highly valued, often reserved for royalty, and required extensive skill to produce. Enslaved Africans brought these techniques to the Americas, adapting them to new materials and circumstances. The appliqué and patchwork methods they introduced became foundational to African American quilting, blending African aesthetics with European influences.

In conjunction with the solo quilt show "Before I Go", fiber artist and quilter Kimberley Pierce Cartwright will teach a hand stitching workshop at the Diggs Gallery August 21 from 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM. In this workshop participants, age 16+ will use needle and thread to create a scrappy mini quilt. Join Diggs Gallery at WSSU for “Before I Go” Quilts & Clay exhibition by North Carolina native Kimberley Pierce Cartwright is a quilter, folk art painter and entrepreneur who grew up in Hallsboro, NC. She began her artistic career as a quilter and painter in 2006.

As the child of a seamstress, she often had access to her mother’s scrap cloth materials that allowed her to produce hand-stitched dolls, as well as clothes for the dolls. This would
encourage a lifelong love for sewing. She now sews regularly, producing one-of-a-kind and uniquely designed quilts, paintings, and mixed media projects that reflect her stance on social, political, and cultural issues.

Kimberley is a noted art quilter and educator whose work transforms reclaimed textiles into richly layered narratives about memory, resilience, and the African American experience.
Working primarily with repurposed fabrics, paint, found embellishments and ceramic figures, Cartwright creates quilts that read as intimate histories—bringing personal and communal stories into dialog through texture, color, and stitched mark-making.

Using paint, reclaimed fabric, paper, and plastic, Cartwright explores topics of interest such as slavery, the African American Diaspora, the Civil Rights Movement, and Afro-Southern life in general. Cartwright exhibits her abilities through not only quilts, but the production of small, whimsical fabric postcards, dolls, totems, and other items.

Her work has been shown at the Nasher Museum at Duke University, Hayti Heritage Center, North Carolina Central University, and other regional venues. She has completed artist residencies
with the Resource Center for Women and Ministry in the South (2022–2023) and Cassilhaus (2024), where she expanded her practice and led community projects that bridge art-making and social connection. In 2025 Cartwright served as director of Kindred Spirits: A Convergence of African American Quilters in Durham — an exhibition and convening that was profiled by the New York Times.
