We are so excited to host visiting artist Howard Schwartzberg and his exhibit, "The Classroom", opening Monday October 19th!
"I grew up in Coney Island, Brooklyn, looking out from a twentieth-floor window onto the ocean and a neglected amusement park. I still live and run my studio in Brooklyn, on the other side of the borough near Pratt Institute, where I studied as an undergraduate. As a child, my summers were spent in a bungalow colony in Woodbourne, New York, which left a lasting impression and fostered a deep connection to nature, planting the seeds for an eventual return.
I began exhibiting in New York City in the early 1990s, with exhibitions at The Drawing Center and Stux Gallery, followed by a one-person exhibition at Silverstein Gallery in Chelsea in 1998 and an environmental earthwork at Socrates Sculpture Park in 1999. For more than twenty years, I taught art in the New York City public school system, developing educational programs for students, staff, and the wider community that integrated concepts of relational aesthetics.
Since my retirement, I have refocused on painting in my Brooklyn and Catskills studios and returned to exhibiting, most recently with two solo exhibitions at Private Public Gallery in Hudson, New York, and with an upcoming show at the University of Albany Museum in 2026."
Howard will be holding a distinguished lecture 12:00PM-1:00PM in CM109 on Tuesday, October 20th. An opening reception will be held in the evening from 5:30PM-7:30PM at the Gallery (CM200).
