Three generations depicted in stone. Richard Mupumha is a second generation artist who has ascended to become an elder and mentor to many young artists in the Shona/Zimbabwean sculpting community. He has a strong following in Europe, Canada and the U.S.
Richard has been represented at Zimstone Gallery for over 20 years and he continues to produce relevant and inspiring work.

The grandson and son of early Shona sculpting legends, Farai Tandi has carved (pun intended 😀) out his own legacy as one of the most talented third generation Shona/Zimbabwean artists.
We’ve proudly represented him at Zimstone Gallery and his work has been collected internationally.

Thinking back on our time with one of the early giants of Shona sculpture, Fanizani Akuda, 1932-2011. Born in Zambia, Fanizani came to what was then Rhodesia to work on the farms owned by Tom Blomfield.
When the world boycotted Rhodesian to***co, Blomfield encouraged the laborers, who had been sculpting for years, to create work for commercial sales.
Akuda was encouraged by his peers to also sculpt but refused, fearing the stones would splinter and could harm his eyes.
He eventually joined the sculpting community of the early greats, also known as the first generation. His work always depicted the human form with only a small slit across the eyelids, reflecting his early apprehension. This became his trademark style.

Fanizani Akuda, was our friend and he is dearly missed.
