Villanova University Art Gallery Welcome to the Villanova University Art Gallery. All exhibits are open to the public and are free of charge.

We are a not-for-profit campus gallery whose mission is to present high quality exhibits by new, emerging, and established artists from around the world. Over the years, guest artists exhibiting at the gallery have come from as far away as Kuwait and as close to home as Philadelphia. The gallery has hosted exhibits of traditional watercolors from China, carved masks and totems from the Yoruba culture of West Africa, Batiks from Belorussia, and handcrafted ceramics and glassware from Italy. We have served as an inaugural venue for young artists and provided an exhibition space for talented older citizens whose discovery of the artist within came much later in life.

For Math major Lexxie Rousseau, taking her first-ever art class, Watercolor Painting, has changed the way she experiences art.

“Before taking watercolor, I appreciated art, but I never fully understood how much time, thought, and emotion goes into creating every piece,” Lexxie shares. “Now, I think more about the artist behind the work and all the different components that went into bringing it to life.”

This realization has pushed Lexxie to experience more art in person and during a recent visit to VU’s newest exhibition, Hearts of the Harvest: Seeds, Stories, and Sovereignty, she was especially drawn to Tammie Dupuis’s Moon Over the Salish Sea.

Raised on the Flathead Reservation in Montana, Dupuis draws on her Indigenous and non-Indigenous heritage to explore identity, history, and belonging. Her artistic practice is deeply informed by her personal experiences and cultural heritage, something Lexxie found particularly meaningful as she reflected on the painting.

“Taking an art class has made me realize that art is so much more than the finished piece,” Lexxie reflects. “There’s a personal story behind it, and I think understanding that makes seeing art in person even more meaningful.”

For Lexxie, what began as her first art class has become a new way of connecting with the art around her, reminding her that behind every work is an artist with a story worth discovering.

During his junior year, Aagam enrolled in his first Art History course, an introductory survey with Dr. Seymour, alongside a few friends from the Finance major. From Renaissance painting to photography, he quickly became interested in the material.

Now enrolled in Dr. Pires’ Modern Art course, Aagam is exploring everything from Neo-Impressionism to Dada and has developed a particular interest in abstract art and geometric forms.

“I’ve always thought traditional paintings and landscapes were beautiful, but being exposed to more abstract art completely changed the way I think about it,” Aagam says. “I love finding your own meaning in a work while also learning what the artist intended. In Modern Art, we learned about Duchamp’s ‘art coefficient’, the space between the artist’s intention and what the viewer takes away. I think I’m drawn to art where that space is slightly bigger because there’s more room to interpret it for yourself.”

That perspective has also changed the way Aagam sees art around Villanova. His favorite work on campus is a geometric painting in the Performing Arts Center that he had passed countless times as a sophomore. Although created long after the modern era, its geometric composition reminds him of De Stijl and elements of Cubism, while its three-dimensional forms and depth set it apart from the works he studies in class.

Now, Aagam finds himself making connections between the art he studies and the art he encounters every day. What began as a humanities requirement has become a new way of seeing the world around him.
