enings and on weekends. Biography: Averil Smith Barone received her masters in Art Education from University of the Arts in 1994. She was an art agent for children's book illustration from 1995-2002. She ran the Saturday school for the University of the Arts and teaches at local community centers. She works for Art-Reach in Philadelphia as a workshop artist and is a professional watercolor artist and has shown and sold her work in many local galleries. She is also commissioned to paint houses and barn portraits.

It’s funny. When I worked at The Barnes foundation I intentionally avoided speaking about Renoir because I felt his work was often too saccharine and saturated. But looking at his work now I recognize that his technique to create light and shadow on an often time n**e woman is truly magical.

“One Helluva Hill”. I just found this in my closet. It was from a series of watercolors in Glen Mills, Pennsylvania in 2016 when I had to commute in a snowstorm. The road was steep and treacherous. When I was in my late 30s this idea for a New Yorker cartoon popped in my head. I made some iterations of it back then and just like many other artistic ideas it fell by the wayside. For my birthday my friend Jill gave me a gift card to Blick. I decided to purchase real cartoon supplies with her generous present. I tried 4 times to create it. It’s not easy and I give cartoonists a huge amount of credit. I finished this and entered the contest. Sadly, I did not win! 🥇 But the experience and the process I will never forget. I pushed myself out of my own comfort zone. It’s about a childhood myth that I always thought was humorous. I am going to post on Reddit and Instagram and see where it takes me. Enjoy!
