Despacio…but Never Ordinary
What if the point wasn’t getting there first?
Opening December 5th in the Museum is the SITES Exhibitions Smithsonian Institution’s “Lowrider Culture in the United States/Cultura Lowrider en Los Estados Unidos”. This bilingual exhibition explores the creativity, community and craftsmanship of the lowrider movement which emerged after World War II.
For Lowriders, the journey has always mattered as much as the destination. Despacio….low and slow…became a celebration of family, neighborhood pride, and artistry. Cruising wasn’t about speed. It was about sharing beautifully crafted vehicles with friends, waving to neighbors, and honoring traditions passed from one generation to the next. Every mile invited conversation. Every stop became an impromptu gallery. Discover why this philosophy continues to inspire communities around the world.

“Lowrider Culture in the United States /Cultura Lowrider en Los Estados Unidos” is organized by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service in collaboration with the National Museum of American History and received support from the Latino Initiatives Pool and the National Museum of the American Latino.
