The Eagle Dancer by Ted DeGrazia.

This one has so much energy. The sweeping feathers, bold purple sky, and dramatic eagle headdress fill nearly every inch of the canvas.

DeGrazia really captured the feeling of movement here—you can almost see the dance in motion.

Little Deer Dancer by Ted DeGrazia, 1975.

So much movement packed into one painting. The bright ribbons, rattles, and deer headdress practically jump off the canvas, especially against that loose, colorful background. One of those DeGrazia pieces that just feels alive.

Muchachito by Ted DeGrazia, 1954. 🌸

There’s just something about this one. The oversized hat, the tiny flower baskets, and those pops of purple against the darker background, it has so much character while still being unmistakably DeGrazia.

One of those pieces you can’t help but stop and look at for a little while.

Yaqui & Singer by Ted DeGrazia, 1967.

Set against a brilliant yellow background, DeGrazia captures a moment of movement and music, contrasting the standing dancer with the seated singers. Thick, expressive brushstrokes and flashes of color give the scene an unmistakable energy.

One of Ted DeGrazia’s playful mouse characters, caught in a moment of candlelight. 🐭🕯️

Mice appeared in a number of DeGrazia’s works and even found their way into books and sculpture. Here, loose brushwork, bright yellow and pink, and the burst of light from a tiny candle turn a simple subject into something unmistakably DeGrazia.

Father Serra by Ted DeGrazia.

DeGrazia became fascinated with Fray Junípero Serra, even retracing the missionary’s travels through California. His studies eventually inspired The Rose and the Robe, a series of paintings chronicling Serra’s journey and the early California missions.

The roses seen here carry special significance—DeGrazia wrote of Serra encountering a rose in the wilderness that reminded him of Spain, an image that helped inspire the series’ title.

♍ Virgo Season

Virgo, as imagined by Ted DeGrazia. Surrounded by light and accompanied by two angels, DeGrazia’s interpretation brings his distinctive color, texture, and Southwestern style to the sixth sign of the zodiac.

Two Cats by Ted DeGrazia, 1944.

An early DeGrazia work, painted decades before many of the images he became best known for. With a limited palette and loose, expressive brushwork, these two cats offer a glimpse into the artist’s evolving style.

Free as the Wind, 1961

Ted DeGrazia’s love of horses inspired hundreds of paintings, watercolors and drawings throughout his career. In Free as the Wind, four horses charge across the canvas, their movement captured through DeGrazia’s dynamic use of the palette knife.

Created in 1961, the painting reflects a subject DeGrazia returned to again and again—the wild horse, which has been described by the Gallery as a reflection of his own fiercely independent nature.

Pack Horse by Ted DeGrazia.

Horses were a recurring subject throughout DeGrazia’s work, appearing in his depictions of Southwestern life, historical scenes, and some of his best-known series. Here, a solitary pack horse stands beneath a vivid red sky, its colorful load rendered in DeGrazia’s unmistakable line and color.
