Well, WHAT an amazing couple of weeks! Life has been a 🌪️ so I’m just getting to posting but better late than never!
As a member of TMAs Western Art Patrons (WAP), a group I highly recommend you join, I attended a field trip to the Phoenix Art Museum. We made a bucket list stop at, of all places, Mr. Merrill Mahaffey‘s home and studio! You’d have thought I was meeting Elvis! I had to contain myself! He shared with us his charming home, processes, approaches and philosophies. I was starry eyed! Then, when we arrived at the Phoenix Art Museum, the Director was kind enough to welcome us and set us on our way to their café for a lovely lunch and THEN two of their wonderful Docents gave us tours of the Cara Romero exhibition and their western art collection. After a lively bus trip home, it was time to recoup and get ready for the next adventure.
There was an interior designer event at the Sculpture Tucson park located on Brandi Fenton Memorial Park. Rubbed elbows with some of the coolest cats in town! Really built up my excitement for the Sculpture Tucson event (March 27 through the 29th). If you haven’t gotten your premiere party tickets yet, you’d better grab them before they sell out. Saturday and Sunday is free admission and you’ll see work you won’t find anywhere else. I highly recommend using ink on your calendar for that weekend!
And then, of course there’s Second Sunday (aka Second SundAZe) at the Tucson Museum of Art. We had none other than Walter Piehl painting LIVE in our main entrance hall. What a trooper he was! He stood there for hours showing us how he creates his incredibly moving abstract western works! and of course, I jumped in for a photo with this charming cowboy! Then it was off to listen to one of my fellow Docent give her art talk. Every second Sunday, you will find us in the stonewall hall. I suggest you check the calendar for topics in and around town. Barbara did an amazing job of making us all feel joyful and also do a little deep thinking during her wonderful talk A Touch of Whimsy: Art That Makes Us Smile.
How do you too fill your calendar with this kind of excitement? Weeeeell, allow me to share. All you have to do is go to Visit Tucson, This is Tucson, the Tucson Museum of Art calendar of events or the Brandi Fenton Memorial Park website, and check out the happenings because if you blink, you’ll miss it!
