Everyone welcome our new featured artist, Ida Kristine Tuxen. This talented young emerging artist just finished her first year of college, and is already quite prolific in her art!
To create these warm welcoming animal portraits, Ida uses realistic colored pencil and pastel pencil. Her main focus is on wildlife, nature, realism studies, and detailed animal portraits. Each piece is created using layered traditional drawing techniques designed to capture texture, light, color variation, and lifelike detail.
Many of these works begin with color theory underpaintings and structured base layers before transitioning into realism through the repeated application of colored pencil and pastel pencil. Ida’s work highlights experimentation with different surfaces and materials, including toned paper, which allow highlights and color contrasts to behave differently than on traditional white surfaces. These material choices play an important role in the mood and visual depth of each artwork, especially in pieces featuring iridescent feathers, or reflections.
