The Lake County Historical Museum is located in the historic courthouse in Tavares at 317 W. The entire 1st floor of the building is utilized by the museum. There is something for everyone here at the Lake County Historical Museum. Military history, transportation history, hotel history, Native American history, citrus industry history, Walt Disney history, and much more! We have been busy updati

ng the museum and we have new exhibits up now for you to view. If you have never been to the museum we encourage you to stop by and visit! There is no cost to come, though we do have a donations box if you are feeling generous! Come out to the Lake County Historical Museum, you won't be disappointed!

This September 11 marks 25 years since the attacks that claimed nearly 3,000 lives and forever changed our nation.

The Lake County Board of County Commissioners, in partnership with the Lake County Historical Society and the City of Tavares, invites the community to join us for a remembrance ceremony honoring the lives lost and reflecting on the courage, sacrifice, and unity shown in the face of tragedy.

📅 Friday, Sept. 11 | 9 a.m.
📍 Lake County Administration Building Rotunda (315 W. Main St., Tavares)

The ceremony will feature patriotic choral selections by the Tavares High School Choir, the Mount Dora High School JROTC Cadets performing a Table of Honor, and Lake County Teen Court participants reading the victims' names.

Some things carry more than a tune… they carry a story. 🎶

This melodeon (a 19th-century keyboard instrument and a type of small reed organ) made its way to Florida in 1877, traveling with a family who brought it by boat to Fernandina, by train to Jacksonville, and then along the St. Johns and Ocklawaha Rivers before finally reaching Leesburg by carriage. A journey that took 17 hours by the time they reached their destination.

But its story didn’t end there. The melodeon became part of picnics, church services, Sunday school, and community gatherings. It provided music and entertainment at a time when there weren’t many other forms of it. For the people who heard it, this little instrument became part of everyday life and shared memories.

Florida's cowboy story did not unfold across open plains, it played out through dense palmetto scrub and cypress swamp, which is why it looked so different from the Wild West we picture in movies. Instead of lassos, cow hunters relied on cur dogs and sturdy "cracker ponies" to move cattle through thick brush.

By the years before the Civil War, Florida's cattle industry ranked second only to Texas in livestock value, with herds driven along routes like the famous Cracker Trail to markets in Jacksonville, Savannah, and Charleston. The breed nearly disappeared in the twentieth century, but conservation efforts brought it back, and in 2018 the State of Florida officially named the Florida Cracker its heritage cattle breed.

🌳 This piece of Florida history has some serious roots.

Though The Senator was not originally located in Lake County, you can find a little piece of this legendary Florida tree right here in our museum!

For an estimated 3,500 years, The Senator stood in what is now Longwood, Florida. The massive bald cypress once reached approximately 127 feet tall, measured 17.5 feet in diameter, and had a circumference of about 47 feet.

Long before it became a famous Central Florida landmark, the towering cypress was reportedly used by Native American groups as a landmark while traveling through the region, helping guide travelers from the St. Johns River toward inland trading grounds. Its enormous size made it visible across the surrounding landscape.

The Senator survived for thousands of years before it was tragically destroyed by fire in 2012. Today, a section of its enormous trunk has been preserved and is part of our collection, giving visitors the chance to see a physical piece of a tree that witnessed years of Florida history.

Many who called Lake County home would have carried this rifle in battle.

Behind its legendary battlefield performance is an interesting design story. Its inventor, John C. Garand, actually wanted the rifle to load from a detachable box magazine rather than the eight round en bloc clip it became famous for. The U.S. Army's Ordnance Department overruled him, preferring an internal loading system similar to the earlier M1903 Springfield rifle, so Garand redesigned around an en bloc clip system based on a patent held by fellow engineer John Pedersen.

That clip is also responsible for one of the M1 Garand's most enduring legends: the metallic ping it made when ejected after the last round was fired. Popular stories claim enemy soldiers listened for that sound to know an American rifleman needed to reload, but no documented case has ever confirmed a single casualty resulting from it. Historians consider it more battlefield myth than fact.

By the time the M1 Garand was retired from frontline service, it had already shaped the design of the rifle that replaced it, the M14, which finally gave soldiers the detachable magazine Garand had wanted from the very beginning.

🚂 Before highways, there were the rails!

When Alexander St. Clair-Abrams founded Tavares in 1880, he envisioned the town becoming a major commercial and transportation hub for Central and South Florida. The railroad was a big part of that vision.

The Tavares & Gulf Railroad began in 1881, carrying produce and connecting Tavares with communities across Central Florida. The line became known as the “Tug and Grunt” because trains struggled through Florida’s sugar sand and shifting tracks, making for a famously slow and bumpy ride.

The railroad eventually became part of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad and continued operating into the 1950s. By the 1960s, however, the line was closing down piece by piece.

Today, the railroad is a reminder of the big plans, challenges and connections that helped shape Lake County.
