✍️ Naval Armed Guards’ Graffiti ⚓

While few historical details remain about the graffiti found within the Naval Armed Guards’ Quarters, it is not hard to imagine the thoughts and emotions of the young men who left their marks behind.

The Armed Guards were often among the youngest and least experienced members aboard merchant ships during wartime. Far from home and facing the uncertainties of war, many left behind names, drawings, and messages that still survive today aboard the American Victory.

These markings are more than simple graffiti, they are lasting reminders of the sailors who served and of the human stories woven into the ship’s history

🦅 Today is National American Eagle Day! 🇺🇸
Each year, we observe this day to commemorate the adoption of the Bald Eagle as the national symbol of the United States on June 20, 1782.
Despite their name, Bald Eagles are not actually bald. The name comes from an old English word meaning "white-headed," referring to the striking white head and tail that they develop when they reach maturity at around five years of age.
Bald Eagles mate for life, with females typically being larger than males. Both parents share nesting duties and work together to raise their young.
While this majestic bird has made an incredible recovery from near extinction, it remains vulnerable to threats such as habitat loss, pesticides, and environmental contamination.

🍺 Carling Black Label Beer 🇺🇸

On September 10th, 1967 The SS American Victory carried 400 cases of Carling Black Label beer for the troops in Vietnam.

The military did not always have the alcohol regulations it does today. During the Vietnam War, American beer companies donated enough beer for every troop to receive a daily ration and even began exporting directly to Vietnam.

When labor strikes disrupted production at several major Milwaukee breweries, Carling Black Label quickly became a favorite among American G.I.s by being the first brand to resume production and supply the troops overseas. Even though it was shipped unrefrigerated in outdated steel cans, many veterans still remember it fondly today. Sometimes, even a simple can of beer could offer a small reminder of home.

Happy Flag Day & Happy 251st Birthday to the United States Army from The Official Flagship of Florida!🎉

Today, June 14th, we celebrate two important pieces of American history. In 1777, the Second Continental Congress adopted the first official United States flag - the Stars and Stripes that continue to symbolize freedom, unity, and resilience. 🦅

We also honor the 251st birthday of the United States Army, founded on June 14, 1775. For over two centuries, generations of soldiers have served and sacrificed in defense of our nation. 🇺🇸

Take a moment today to proudly fly your flag and remember all those who have dedicated themselves to protecting it. ❤️🤍💙

📡 RCA Marine Radiogram ⚓

Marine radiograms like the one pictured below were specially designed for use with the RCA Radio 4-U system, which was installed aboard all Victory ships to handle ship communications.

Although developed during World War II, these powerful vacuum tube radio systems remained in service through the Vietnam War. Messages received in Morse code were carefully transcribed by the ship’s radio operator using a unique typewriter known as the “mill,” which featured only capital letter keys.

Even today, many of these original radiograms remain preserved within the ship’s storage spaces - remarkable snapshots of communication at sea and an enduring connection to the sailors who once served aboard
