Surry County VA Historical Society & Museums

Surry County VA Historical Society & Museums The Surry County, Virginia, Historical Society and Museums, Inc. is a nonprofit organization to pres The Society is incorporated as a Nonprofit Corporation.

THE SURRY COUNTY, VIRGINIA, HISTORICAL SOCIETY AND MUSEUMS, INC. began at an organizational meeting on 28 February 1998 when Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws were approved. Officers for 1998 were elected on 11 May 1998. As of 6 November 1998 the Society's status as a nonprofit organization had been confirmed by the IRS. Donations to the Society are now tax-deductible. The Society has had as ma

ny as 500 members in twenty states! There are currently around 230 members. The Society now has a new office in Surry, VA, with a place for its library and displays. But we need volunteers. to help in the office at Surry, and the Rogers Store museum at Carsley,
to help with publishing historical works about all segments of our history,
to involve youth in the Society's work and teach them our county's history,
to move ahead in developing Museum sites throughout the county that highlight the rich history of life in Surry County over the past nearly 350 years. By giving your time, you can make many new friends and help a lot of people connect with their heritage. You can make a difference! For information about volunteering, call the Society Office at 757-294-0404 or email [email protected] . Efforts have already begun in Carsley, where the Rogers Store and its extensive inventory of memorabilia and records have been made available to the Society through the generous gift by John Rogers, descendant of the original owner, Watt Rogers, and his mother, Becky Rogers. Work is now underway on restoration of the Captain John Smith Ferry Deckhouse beside the Society's office in Surry. Citizens from all over the county have come together to preserve and study the county's history. Groups and individuals from Carsley, Claremont, Dendron, Surry, West Surry and every corner of the county are pooling their energy and resources. Historical photographs, documents, books, and family genealogies have been donated. Carsley has the complete records of Rogers's store. Dendron even has a very early railroad car. Early documents are on display at Claremont Town Hall.

We have been given a gift of a print with a picture that we believe to have taken in our area... perhaps Surry, Sussex, Southampton, or Prince George County. We would really like to identify the man with the plow and the farm where the picture was taken. A local farmer said that the box is a peanut planter. The chicken houses can be seen in the background, as well as a small building...smokehouse, storage building, etc. IF anyone has any information on the person and/ or the farm, please contact us! Please share with people in your area and in other counties fairly near us!

Update! We've had success in connecting this family to Claremont! Working on getting the book to Surry Historical Society and perhaps family, if possible! Thanks to those who helped!

We have a request from someone who found a book from when Arthur James Mangus Jr from Claremont was born in 1928, and it has comments from parents and relatives about the early days of Arthur. It's a baby book with some pictures, etc.
We haven't found this name in our records so far, nor the family name in the cemetery. Anyone familiar with this name?
Write us at [email protected] or answer here!

A note from Fran Barnes, outgoing Vice President of Surry County Historical Society...
I would like to give a big THANK YOU to Jefferson Lodge No. 65 who presented me their COMMUNITY BUILDERS AWARD on Tuesday, May 19, 2026 at my volunteer site, Surry County, VA Historical Society & Museums. Even though it has my name on it, the certificate is really for ALL of our Officers, Board Members, Volunteers, and Members who help the Surry Historical Society to continue to offer access to our history of Surry County. What a great idea James Atkins had to begin this Historical County with the many other Surry County citizens. Although not a native of Surry, I have been here 56 years and truly love the part our county played in the history of our country. I truly am appreciative of this recognition given to me by the Jefferson Lodge. A special thank you to Lodge member, Gene Milburn, and to Steve Holloway, and Mark Senatrek who presented the certificate to me.
