"I feel a cold northern breeze play upon my cheeks, which braces my nerves, and fills me with delight."

Robert Walton, portrayed by Patrick Hamilton during Phantoms by Firelight: Frankenstein Encounter, is a young English explorer chasing glory towards the North Pole. A failed poet before he was a sea captain, he longs above all for a kindred spirit. When his ship becomes trapped in Arctic ice, his crew rescues a frozen, half-dead Victor Frankenstein — and Walton finally finds the friend he has been searching for.

"I commit my cause to the justice of my judges, yet I see no room for hope."

Justine Moritz, portrayed by Kaylee Patchakos during Phantoms by Firelight: Frankenstein Encounter, came to live with the Frankenstein family as a girl after losing her mother to illness at a young age, and has since become the nurse to young William, whom she has loved as her own. After William's disappearance one night, Justine has searched longer than anyone to find him, a devotion that left her exposed when the Creature frames her for William's murder.

Just as Victor Frankenstein's creation was assembled from body parts, a Frankenbook is (typically) a book pieced together from parts of other volumes. This 1796 volume of "The Voyages and Adventures of Captain Robert Boyle" is slightly different in that it’s been reassembled, but all the components came from the same publication. The covers, text, and spine all started out as one whole volume, presumably, but broke apart over time and were later stitched back together.

C***r mills like the one at the Village once operated throughout New England in September and October, converting most of the region’s apple crops into c***r. Most early 19th-century New England farm families had apple orchards, but few owned a mill to make the apples into c***r. Farmers would bring their apples to a local mill and pay a fee to use it. After bringing barrels of c***r home to their cellars, New England farmers intentionally let it turn “hard,” or alcoholic, to preserve it through the spring and summer heat until the next apple harvest season. Learn more about the process and see the C***r Mill at Old Sturbridge Village in action on weekends through October 25. 🍎

Approximately how many apples does it take to produce a gallon of c***r?

In 17th and early 18th-century eastern and central New England, gravestones were often made of gray slate, and sometimes local fieldstone. As Euro-Americans colonized western New England in the mid- to late 18th century, they also began using white marble. In the Connecticut River Valley, locals often used red sandstone, and some used it in the Sturbridge area as well. From around 1800, white marble became increasingly fashionable throughout New England. Following the fashion for marble, a simpler profile, often a plain rectangle, steadily gained in popularity over the arched 18th-century profile. Decorations became minimal, and versification declined somewhat as well.

Be sure to stop by the Cabinetmaking Shop during Phantoms by Firelight: Frankenstein Encounter to learn more about 19th-century grave carving and coffin making!

"He played a sweet mournful air, which I perceived drew tears from the eyes of his amiable companion... until she sobbed audibly."

Agatha, portrayed by Rebecca Rooney during Phantoms by Firelight: Frankenstein Encounter, lives on a humble farm in quiet poverty with her blind father and her brother, Felix. The De Lacey family is unknowingly watched by the Creature through a c***k in their cottage wall. Her constant care for her family, hidden behind her own sorrow, taught the Creature what kindness looked like, even from a distance. When she does not reciprocate the Creature's affections, chaos ensues.
