Step inside the Berkshires’ oldest home and discover Revolutionary stories of liberty, justice, and the power of individual courage on a guided house tour 📜✍️🏡

The house was built in 1735 by Colonel John Ashley, a leading citizen in the new town of Sheffield and later a prominent local supporter of the Continental Army who helped draft the Sheffield Resolves (supposedly here in his study).

Today, this site is best remembered not for its eminent owner, but for its connection to Elizabeth ‘Mum Bett’ Freeman, who was enslaved here before suing for her freedom in a landmark case that helped end slavery across Massachusetts.

Learn how the interconnected stories of Freeman, the Ashleys, and other people they enslaved here reveal a deeper, more inclusive understanding of Revolutionary New England.

📍 The Ashley House, Sheffield MA

🏡 Guided house tours: June 19, June 28, July 18, August 8

✨ Can’t make the tour? Visit the Elizabeth Freeman Interpretive Center, open daily, sunrise to sunset
