#Juneteenth is celebrated annually on June 19th to commemorate the emancipation of the enslaved population in the United States. On this day 155 years ago, the enslaved people in Texas finally received the news that they were free- despite having already been legally free for nearly two and a half years.

Visit Staten Island

A #tbt featuring the October - December, 1976 issue of The Staten Island Historian. The cover story titled "Green, And Red, And a Little Blue: The Story of Staten Island in the American Revolution" was written by Harlow McMillen. This is Part 7 of the series,

The cover photo shows a photo of John Adams, Edward Rutledge, Benjamin Franklin, Lord Richard Howe and Henry Strachey. These men were at the historic (but failed) 1776 Peace Conference which discussed ending the American Revolution. Want to feel this history? Get a tour at The Conference House right here on Staten Island!

It begins: ๐Ÿ“–
"The area of war had moved from Staten Island to neighboring Long Island across the Narrows when 15,000 British soldiers landed at Gravesend Bay on the morning of August 22, 1776. On the 25th, 5,000 Hessians struck camp on Staten Island and joined General William Howe's army at Gravesend, leaving only a small force to defend the Island from incursions from New Jersey. Many of the soldiers left were ill. Staten Island was their hospital.

The large British army did not leave Staten Island as they had found it. Horses and wagons had been requisitioned and brought to Long Island. The officers, if not the men, had, during their stay, demanded more than the salt provisions provided from army stores, and the pressure placed on the Island farmers to supply fresh meat and produce must have been great, although payment in good coin of the realm was made. The shortage of supplies must have worried many an Islander as he thought of the winter ahead. Fences had been used as firewood, especially on the north shore and in the vicinity of troop encampments elsewhere. There would be hard work in the fall for Island men and boys if they expected to keep from freezing before the spring thaw."

Check back with us next Thursday as we will be featuring these covers until we run out of them! You can learn more about the Staten Island Historical Society, which calls Historic Richmond Town home, at https://statenisland.pastperfectonline.com/.

I'm pleased to announce my new book, "A Historical Journey Across Raritan Bay," will be published on July 12, 2020, by The History Press. The Conference House is described several times in the book as a major part of our history. I have created a Facebook Group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/RaritanBayshoreHistory) to regularly post excerpts, chapters and photographs from the book until it's published. Feel free to post anything else regarding the history in and around Raritan Bay which includes parts of both New York and New Jersey.
One of my favorite YouTubers mentioned you in a video today, and that's how I learned about the museum and Captain Billopp.
