Join us next Saturday, October 3, for the music series Jazz Is Staten Island w/ ! 🎶 Next up: FLAMENKORA (Senegal, Madrid, New York) with Volker Goetze, Roberto Monteiro, and Ali Boulo Santo Cissoko!

By sensitively and skillfully interweaving improvised trumpet and flamenco guitar with traditional mandinka kora and vocals from Senegal, FlamenKora creates timeless and enchanting multicultural music; a welcome balm in these troubled times.

Volker Goetze’s evocative trumpet lines dance gracefully with the soulful vocals and kora of his newest duo partner, the esteemed master of traditional Mande music – Ali Boulo Santo Cissoko. Up-and-coming Rio de Janeiro and Madrid based flamenco guitar maestro Roberto Monteiro is the newest band member, adding authentic Spanish flair with driving rhythms and subtle, imaginative colors. As the group’s founder and producer, Goetze brings a special wisdom to FlamenKora, acquired not only through decades of devotion to West African Mande music, but also through a deep mastery of jazz composition and arrangement and a recent deep dive into the melodic and rhythmic traditions of flamenco.

🌧 Due to the approaching nor’easter and expected severe weather conditions this weekend, the unveiling of PROXIMITY has been postponed to Friday, October 2. We’ll resume regular gallery hours next Friday, just in time for the Fence Show next weekend!

Thank you for your understanding. We look forward to sharing the exhibition with you on October 2 and celebrating together at the opening event on October 16.

These private studios are set within the historic buildings of Snug Harbor and offer a glimpse into the creative process. Each year during Open House New York, we invite the public in to witness and be in conversation with the artists, their work, spaces, and contributions to the cultural vibrancy of Snug Harbor.

This is the perfect opportunity to explore spaces that are not usually open to the public, and to engage with the creative community that calls Snug Harbor home.

New exhibition alert! 🎨PROXIMITY opens September 26--this Saturday! Pop in during the Fence Show to say hello!

Featuring work by: Erin Butler, Linda Butti, Mary Campbell, Lisa Dahl, Griselda Healy, Craig Manister, Ann Marie McDonnell, Mike Shane, Gayle Tanaka, Martha Trivizas.

Celebrating Snug Harbor’s longstanding studio program, where artists in residence create new work within its historic buildings, PROXIMITY explores the studio as a generative space: artists working near one another across space, time, and relationship. Spanning painting, photography, and mixed media, PROXIMITY is not defined by a shared aesthetic, but by a condition of closeness. Here, proximity becomes more than a matter of place—it becomes a context through which individual practices develop, intersect, and inform one another.

“It's so much more than just beautiful buildings. It's a sanctuary, and it must be preserved.”

When Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis visited Snug Harbor in the summer of 1976 with the Municipal Art Society, she recognized something extraordinary in this historic place. She saw a sanctuary—and understood that its story, architecture, and role in the community were worth preserving. Her visit helped bring national attention to Snug Harbor at a pivotal moment in its history.

Fifty years later, we’re celebrating that legacy with “Jackie O and John Perreault at Snug Harbor: A Literary Portrait,” an intimate literary reading exploring the intertwined legacies of two figures who helped shape Snug Harbor’s cultural history.

TOMORROW! Jackie O and John Perreault at Snug Harbor: A Literary Portrait featuring guest speakers Wayne Koestenbaum, Author of Jackie Under My Skin and Andy Warhol: A Biography, and Daniel Rothbart, an artist currently exhibiting at Snug Harbor and friend of John Perreault, artist, art writer, and curator of the Newhouse Center in the mid-1980s.

Artist and writer Daniel Rothbart met Perreault in 1999, and the two maintained a close friendship and ongoing creative dialogue until Perreault’s death in 2015, frequently writing about one another’s work. Perreault included Rothbart in The Ritual Feast at KK Projects in New Orleans in 2008. Drawing on personal experience and longstanding engagement with their subjects, Koestenbaum and Rothbart will reflect on the intertwined legacies of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and John Perreault, and consider how each helped shape the cultural history of Snug Harbor.

📣 Celebrate Snug Harbor’s 50th anniversary of opening our doors as NYC’s premier culture park with a special event, “Jackie O and John Perreault at Snug Harbor: A Literary Portrait” 📣

Led by Wayne Koestenbaum, author of "Jackie Under My Skin" and "Andy Warhol: A Biography", and Daniel Rothbart, an artist currently exhibiting at Snug Harbor and friend of John Perreault, we'll commemorate Snug Harbor opening to the community after the transition from Sailors’ Snug Harbor into Snug Harbor Cultural Center on September 12, 1976, with an intimate literary reading that traces the legacies of two essential figures within the Snug Harbor story.

This literary reading is part of our Serpentine Sybils floating public art installation currently on view.

⭐NYCT Snug Harbor Van Lier Fellow in Visual Arts Artist Spotlight⭐: Vasudev Vashisht

Vasudev Vashisht is an artist-ethnographer of Indian origin based in New York. His work transforms photography into a living collaborative medium through darkroom experimentation, ecological interventions, participatory workshops, and community-centered fieldwork. Vashisht’s work has been exhibited by the New York Foundation for the Arts, CreateCOP29, Photoville Festival, and Baxter St, Camera Club of NY and internationally, by Jaipur Art Week, India & Lishui Photography Festival, China. He was recently awarded the En Foco Artist Fellowship and NYFA’s Immigrant Artist Program Fellowship. Recent publications include The Columbia Journal and D La Repubblica magazines. He has facilitated workshops with communities across the Peruvian Andes and on Governors Island in New York and has shared his research through talks at the MASS MoCA, Society for Photographic Education annual conferences, and Urban Soil Institute NY, among other venues. Vashisht holds an MFA in Photography from Parsons School of Design, NY.

We are so excited to work with Vasudev as one of our New York Community Trust Van Lier Fellows. We look forward to seeing what he creates in the studio for the future exhibition!

⭐ NYCT Snug Harbor Van Lier Fellow in Visual Arts Artist Spotlight ⭐: Brianna Caraballo

Brianna Caraballo is a Puerto Rican American artist of Taino descent who lives and works in Staten Island, New York. Working across painting, ink, watercolor, and clay, her practice is drawn to the elemental dialogue between earth and water, material and spirit. Through color, form, and gesture, she explores memory, identity, and transformation, tracing connections between the cosmos, the body, and the inner self, while reflecting on the interconnectedness of all things. Alongside her practice, Caraballo is a K-12 studio art teacher who bridges public school classrooms, contemporary galleries, and museum spaces. Through trauma-informed pedagogy, she amplifies youth voices and nurtures creativity as a tool for healing, connection, and transformation.

We are so excited to work with Brianna as one of our New York Community Trust Van Lier Fellows. We look forward to seeing what she creates in the studio for the future exhibition!
