⭐NYCT Snug Harbor Van Lier Fellow in Visual Arts Artist Spotlight⭐: Vasudev Vashisht

Vasudev Vashisht is an artist-ethnographer of Indian origin based in New York. His work transforms photography into a living collaborative medium through darkroom experimentation, ecological interventions, participatory workshops, and community-centered fieldwork. Vashisht’s work has been exhibited by the New York Foundation for the Arts, CreateCOP29, Photoville Festival, and Baxter St, Camera Club of NY and internationally, by Jaipur Art Week, India & Lishui Photography Festival, China. He was recently awarded the En Foco Artist Fellowship and NYFA’s Immigrant Artist Program Fellowship. Recent publications include The Columbia Journal and D La Repubblica magazines. He has facilitated workshops with communities across the Peruvian Andes and on Governors Island in New York and has shared his research through talks at the MASS MoCA, Society for Photographic Education annual conferences, and Urban Soil Institute NY, among other venues. Vashisht holds an MFA in Photography from Parsons School of Design, NY.

⭐ NYCT Snug Harbor Van Lier Fellow in Visual Arts Artist Spotlight ⭐: Brianna Caraballo

Brianna Caraballo is a Puerto Rican American artist of Taino descent who lives and works in Staten Island, New York. Working across painting, ink, watercolor, and clay, her practice is drawn to the elemental dialogue between earth and water, material and spirit. Through color, form, and gesture, she explores memory, identity, and transformation, tracing connections between the cosmos, the body, and the inner self, while reflecting on the interconnectedness of all things. Alongside her practice, Caraballo is a K-12 studio art teacher who bridges public school classrooms, contemporary galleries, and museum spaces. Through trauma-informed pedagogy, she amplifies youth voices and nurtures creativity as a tool for healing, connection, and transformation.

We are so excited to work with Brianna as one of our New York Community Trust Van Lier Fellows. We look forward to seeing what she creates in the studio for the future exhibition!

Thank you Staten Island Advance for announcing our inaugural fellowship cohort for the New York Community Trust Snug Harbor Van Lier Fellows in Visual Art. We're so excited to welcome Vasudev Vashisht and Brianna Caraballo to Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden!

The fellowship program supports early-career visual artists who identify as African, Latino/a, Asian, Arab or Native American.

We are excited to announce our inaugural cohort of New York Community Trust Snug Harbor Van Lier Fellows in Visual Arts, Brianna Caraballo and Vasudev Vashisht! 🎉

The New York Community Trust Van Lier Fellowships is a New York-based program that supports early-career artists in theater, music, and visual arts to advance their careers through financial stipends, mentorship, and professional development. The fellowship aims to help talented artists establish themselves in the professional arts community.

Brianna and Vasudev will begin their year-long fellowship by working in their studios, gaining access to transformative resources of professional development support, and will culminate their time at Snug Harbor with a solo exhibition which will launch next summer!

We're screening Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat in partnership with the African Film Festival and Universal Temple of the Arts through our Jazz Is Staten Island series. Directed by Johan Grimonprez and released in 2024, the film was the 2025 Oscar® nominee for Best Documentary Feature.

Join us on 7/11 for the opening celebration of Serpentine Sibyls, the new floating sculptural installation by Daniel Rothbart. As part of the opening festivities, Jeffrey Lependorf, composer and visual artist, will perform an improvised musical meditation.

Lependorf is a master player of the shakuhachi (traditional Japanese bamboo flute) and will play in conversation with the floating sculptures, blending traditional Zen meditation and avant-garde musical techniques.🎶

📣SAVE THE DATE:📣 Serpentine Sibyls – A Floating Sculptural Installation by Daniel Rothbart will be on view on 07/11!

The installation takes its title from the Sibyls—female prophetesses and oracles consulted in times of crisis. In an era marked by floods, heat waves, and wildfires, their presence resonates anew, reflecting the growing precarity of human life amid climate change and environmental loss. Rothbart’s sculptures evoke aquatic organisms and botanical forms from a distant past, conjuring life forms that feel at once primordial and speculative, alien yet strangely familiar. Rooted in deep history while gesturing toward an uncertain future, the works occupy a threshold between memory and prophecy. Situated within Snug Harbor’s historic landscape—a former refuge for sailors—the installation becomes a space for contemplation on where humanity has been and where it may be headed.

Once set afloat, Rothbart’s sculptures are animated by wind and water. Through a visual language of structure, light, buoyancy, and motion, they transform perceptions of the surrounding environment.
