GROWTH IN GREENE | QUESTIONS ANSWERED

Can't we just use the schools we already have?

It's a reasonable question! Greene County already has established school buildings, so why would we need to construct another one?

The answer comes down to capacity and projected growth.

Our schools were designed to accommodate a certain number of students. As Greene County continues to grow, we must consider not only how many students our buildings can accommodate today, but also how many they will need to serve in the years ahead.

A recent growth study conducted by Woolpert identified:

2,753 housing units in planned and active developments throughout Greene County.

1,666 additional K–12 students projected as those developments are built out.

769 additional elementary students projected from that growth alone.

Why not simply add more students to our existing buildings?

School capacity involves much more than the number of desks that can fit into a classroom. Schools also need adequate space for special education services, small-group instruction, cafeterias, restrooms, transportation operations, and other essential student services.

Options such as adjusting attendance boundaries, using available classroom space differently, adding modular classrooms, or expanding existing buildings can be evaluated. However, each option has practical limitations and associated costs.

Planning ahead matters. Designing, funding, and constructing a new school takes years. Greene County Public Schools anticipates needing additional elementary school capacity within the next 5–7 years based on projected community growth.

The bottom line: Our existing schools will continue to serve Greene County students. The question is whether those facilities, on their own, will have enough capacity to accommodate the students expected as our community grows.

The proposed 1% sales tax referendum addresses one possible funding source for school construction and major renovations.

Thank you to all who participated in our Day of Giving event last Saturday. With your generosity, we raised just under $1,200. We are so grateful to everyone who donated. We look forward to making this an annual event.

Your Greene County Historical Society (GCHS) is busy behind the scenes every day making sure that your experience of the museum is the best it can be. Running a museum includes fun things like creating exhibits, greeting visitors like you, and helping people research their family history. But there are also things like mowing the grass, weeding the walkways, cleaning the rooms, paying the bills, and making sure the lights stay on. And all of it, the fun and the not so fun, take time and money. Your gift on our Day of Giving, October 3, 2026, can help make sure all those tasks get done so that GCHS can continue opening its doors to everyone interested in discovering and preserving Greene County history. Our goal is to raise $3,000. Every gift helps us get a little closer and helps keep Greene County history available for all of us.

Did you know that the Greene County Historical Society is run almost completely by volunteers, with just one part-time administrative person helping to answer your emails and phone calls? Our volunteers are an amazing group who do a lot of behind-the-scenes things week in and week out to make sure that your experience at the museum, and at our many events around the county, is a great one. The GCHS is also almost entirely funded by your generous donations. As costs continue to increase, we feel it in everything from postage for our newsletters, museum upkeep, and printer ink and paper. That’s where you can help! Your donation on our Day of Giving, October 3, 2026, will help us meet these everyday needs so that our volunteers can continue doing what matters most: preserving and sharing Greene County history for generations to come. Our goal is to raise $3,000, and every gift, no matter the size, helps us get closer. Donations can be mailed or dropped off in person at the museum or given at the GCHS booth at the Greene County Farmers Market. Did you know that the Greene County Historical Society (GCHS) has digitized scrapbooks from Greene County families and pictures of various residents and events that have occurred in Greene County in the 20th and 21st century? Cataloging these files takes lots of volunteer time and requires up to date computers. Your donation on our Day of Giving, October 3, 2026, can help update our computers so that we can make more resources available online for easy access. It can also help fund daily upkeep at the museum so that our wonderful volunteers have a place to come each week. Mark your calendars now and consider participating in what we hope will become an annual event.

The Greene County Historical Society (GCHS) is hosting a Day of Giving on Saturday October 3, 2026. More details will come out throughout September, but we wanted to let you know now so you can mark your calendars! Our goal is $3,000. Your donation will help support the day-to-day operations of the museum and invest in things like new computers to help us make our vast digital archives available to everyone.
