🐟Happy Fisheries Friday!🐠

Today, we are looking at a series of historic photos, which are housed at the D.C. Booth Historic National Fish Hatchery & Archives. These photos are of Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery, which is located in the state of Washington. Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery was authorized in 1938 under the Mitchell Act. The hatchery was created to propagate and transplant fish to runs in the Entiat, Methow, Wenatchee, and the Okanogan River’s watersheds. This was because the Grand Coulee Dam was being constructed and it was causing the runs of fish in the area to become blocked. The site was officially opened in June 1940, and tons of fish were transplanted in only a few years. The site worked on the Sockeye and Chinook salmon in the beginning.

Today, the hatchery is still active and raises about 1.2 million Chinook salmon every year. The hatchery also works with the Yakama Nation Fisheries and raises about 1 million Coho salmon a year. Due to its age and significance, the hatchery is also on the National Register of Historic Places. If you are in central Washington, go and visit Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery!

Join us in the August 4th talk about the chemical defense mechanisms of milkweed and discover how monarchs not only overcome these defenses, but also use them for their own protection.

🐠Happy Fisheries Friday!🐟

Spring Creek National Fish Hatchery has been a productive and massive fish hatchery located in Underwood in the state of Washington. The site was established in 1901 for the propagation of fall chinook salmon. In the early 1900s, the site was served by the railroad freight to Bingen, Washington. The hatchery has had water coming in from springs and, over the years, has had a variety of different fisheries facilities such as pump houses, residences, raceways, and ponds.

These photos highlight the work done at Spring Creek National Fish Hatchery, changes to the site over the years, and photos of staff, some dating to over 100 years ago!

Today, the Spring Creek National Fish Hatchery is still located in the area of Underwood, WA. The site does massive fish production and focuses on Tule Fall Chinook salmon and raises about 12.5 million each year. The site is also a mitigation facility, meaning it also works to make up for habitat loss due to hydroelectric projects on the river. The Spring Creek National Fish Hatchery is also a part of the Columbia River Gorge National Fish Hatchery Complex, which is made up of six national fish hatcheries. With the help of Spring Creek, the complex produces about 25 million salmon a year. Fin-tastic!!!
