South Pasadena Preservation Foundation

South Pasadena Preservation Foundation The mission of the South Pasadena Preservation Foundation is to foster awareness and appreciation of the historic heritage of South Pasadena and to advocate and facilitate preservation of significant examples of that heritage.

The Preservation Movement in South Pasadena began in earnest in 1970 when South Pasadena Beautiful, founded in 1965, created the South Pasadena Cultural Heritage Committee as a subcommittee to promote historic preservation in the community. This subcommittee, chaired by local architect Jean Driskel, was successful in drafting the city ordinance that created the South Pasadena Cultural Heritage Commission, with powers and duties to advise the City Council on designating cultural and historical sites and landmarks significant to the city’s development. This commission, initially chaired by Raymond Girvigian, FAIA, created the Jean Driskel Cultural Heritage Foundation in honor of the late architect. In 1983, the foundation was renamed the South Pasadena Preservation Foundation. It still complements the commission and is the city’s official preservation agency, supplying volunteers and raising funds for historic preservation. The Foundation also manages the South Pasadena Historical Museum, which opened on May 16, 1987.

Live Concert...asynchronism!

Joe Rinaudo's prized possession is his style 20 American Fotoplayer. The machine was built in the early 1920s to give musical accompaniment to silent movies. It plays music via two piano rolls and is augmented with organ pipes and sound effects galore.

The markets are still swamped and over loaded. Many of the basics are hard to find. While I’m also not lucky enough to have eggs or toilet paper I do have some things that I used to take for granted. Bread is tough, I’m still able to get it for now so I’m offering this care package of sorts for keeping simple meals ready at your home that can last a few days. Throwing in a couple pairs of gloves, hand sanitizer is scarce, gloves have been helpful for me while shopping in a busy area without the ability to wash hands. Call in order to specify type of meat, bread, etc with what’s currently available. Stay safe and sane everyone! Personally, day one off from school already feels like a week lol. #socialdistancing #somanymeals #supportsmallbusiness #inthistogether #southpasadena #pasadena #alhambra #highlandpark #keepyourreserve

If you build it...

Exciting News! After many decades of neglect the Rialto is finally getting the attention she deserves! Scaffolding is up on the exterior as the Rialto owners start repairs on plaster and molding, fixing original windows, and a new paint job to return it to the original colors! On the interior, the tenant has pulled the permits to remodel the lobby, which mostly involves adding an ADA accessible bathroom in what was last used as the concessions back room, but was originally a bathroom.

Friends of the Rialto is working to insure the original colors are brought back for the exterior, and working with both owners and tenants to make sure all historic elements are protected, preserved, and restored. Thanks to the Shomofs (owners) and Mosaic Church (tenants) for working with Friends of the Rialto to accomplish a successful restoration!

Tickets are $30 and are available at www.sppreservation.org.
