South Pasadena Preservation Foundation

South Pasadena Preservation Foundation The mission of the South Pasadena Preservation Foundation is to foster awareness and appreciation of the historic heritage of South Pasadena and to advocate and facilitate preservation of significant examples of that heritage.

The Preservation Movement in South Pasadena began in earnest in 1970 when South Pasadena Beautiful, founded in 1965, created the South Pasadena Cultural Heritage Committee as a subcommittee to promote historic preservation in the community. This subcommittee, chaired by local architect Jean Driskel, was successful in drafting the city ordinance that created the South Pasadena Cultural Heritage Commission, with powers and duties to advise the City Council on designating cultural and historical sites and landmarks significant to the city’s development. This commission, initially chaired by Raymond Girvigian, FAIA, created the Jean Driskel Cultural Heritage Foundation in honor of the late architect. In 1983, the foundation was renamed the South Pasadena Preservation Foundation. It still complements the commission and is the city’s official preservation agency, supplying volunteers and raising funds for historic preservation. The Foundation also manages the South Pasadena Historical Museum, which opened on May 16, 1987.

Tours of churches are standard fare on trips to Europe. Domestically, the activity is decidedly less common, though you can take bus tours of cathedrals in Chicago, Cleveland and even the so-called "painted churches of Texas." And in fairness, Pasadena Heritage has done it a couple times. But when w...

Digitizing History – Scanning is just the Beginning

It wasn’t that long ago that keeping your photographs in order meant making a photo album or filling a slide reel and then storing them in a safe place. Now we have moved to a digital world and many want their pre-digital photographs in that world. Join David Dellinger, our new president, and Anne Mar, Assistant College Archivist/Metadata Specialist at Occidental College, who will discuss digitization standards, file formats, resolution, naming conventions, scanner and storage techniques. All are invited to the Eagle Rock Valley Historical Society Meeting, Tuesday, February 20 7:00 PM at the Center for the Arts, Eagle Rock, 2225 Colorado Blvd.

...hidden in plain sight

Hidden in the walls of South Pasadena High School’s auditorium are marimbas, cymbals, and organ pipes two stories tall. The forgotten Wurlitzer pipe organ, housed in the theater, can play them all. Donated to SPHS in the ‘90s, the Unit 216 Wurlitzer is now maintained by the Los Angeles Theater Organ Society. After finishing recent renovations, Members of the LATOS hope to see the seldom known about instrument come back to life at SPHS.

Good to know...

If you've run in to one of these big, beautiful, iridescent green, and slightly alarming beetles, no worries. It's a figeater beetle, and they are generally harmless, though they love to eat (surprise) figs and other fruits, generally those that are already over-ripe or damaged by birds. Check this link for more information and to learn how they help in the composting process: http://mother-natures-backyard.blogspot.com/2013/08/green-fig-beetle-figeater-beetle-green.html.

What’s in Store for the Rialto Theatre With A Church as its Operator?

KCET chimes in about the Rialto.

The historic Rialto Theatre in Pasadena was once a prized community venue but in recent years has faced neglect. The Mosaic Church has leased the space causing community members to worry the theater will no longer be used for non-religious arts events.
