WEEKEND WARRIORS! Things are getting back to normal at the museum since Michigan’s Stay at Home order was rescinded. We held our first work weekend this year and members spent Saturday and Sunday mowing, painting, weeding, planting flowers, working on equipment and buildings. But, it wasn’t all work and no play. The grass was pretty thick in our old “sand pit” area, and the guys decided to get the antique hay rake out and play. The youngsters had never operated a rake but it didn’t take them long to figure it out.

The Michigan Flywheelers Museum regrets to announce that due to Gov. Whitmer’s executive order issued today to cancel school the rest of the school year, Farm History Day 2020 has also been canceled.
This would have been the 21st year the museum has held the educational event for area students. Since it’s inception over 19,000 kids, parents and teachers from all over southwest Michigan have attended Farm History Day every May where they took part in close to three dozen hands-on learning activities like candle making, grinding corn and making rope.
The museum will continue to monitor federal, state and local public health announcements on the pandemic and how it effects the museum. For updates on museum events, visit Facebook or www.michiganflywheelers.org

Because many of our members fall into the at-risk category for COVID-19, and to do our part to contain the spread of the virus, the Michigan Flywheelers Museum’s Board of Directors has made the decision to cancel our Sunday, March 15 membership meeting as well as the next two Wednesday work days (3/18 & 3/25). As of today, the Sunday, April 19 meeting will be held as scheduled. If that changes, we will let you know as soon as possible. Stay healthy!

We're so excited! Yesterday, the guys drove down to Keeler (MI) to pick up a Love tractor that had been donated to the museum. The tractor has quite a story behind it and has been in Jim Kietzer's family for decades. Jim is selling his parents' farm and had so many fond memories of his dad farming with this Michigan-made tractor that Jim wanted it to go to the museum. The tractor was put together by Jim's dad and a neighbor from parts bought at an auction after the Love tractor company went out of business. This is a great addition to our tractor collection and we thank Jim and his wife for the donation.

THROWBACK THURSDAY! Here's a little history lesson for you.... Almost four decades ago a small group of engine enthusiasts decided they wanted to start an antique engine and tractor club and hauled their old hit-n-miss engines to the grassy parking lot of the local fairgrounds for their first show.
As those first shows became larger, it wasn't long before they outgrew the fairgrounds. So, in 1995, the club purchased property in Geneva Township, east of South Haven. After obtaining its 501 (c)(3) classification, the club made the decision to reorganize, and focus on education by becoming a museum. This year marks the 25th anniversary since purchasing our property, and we are proud to say a lot has been accomplished thanks to the hard work of our members. And, the best part is - we are not done yet! Happy Throwback Thursday!

Set your timers for Wednesday, Feb. 12 at 8 p.m when Discovery Channel’s Expedition Unknown features the story of Northwest Flight 2501 that disappeared over the Lake Michigan shoreline in the 1950s. Host Josh Gates visited South Haven last September to investigate the disappearance and stopped at our Antique Engine and Tractor Show where he was filmed sawing lumber, driving the Funk Special and riding on a steam traction engine. There’s a good chance, he told us last September, that footage of our show will be included in this episode so set those DVRs for Wednesday, Feb. 12!

Workin’ Wednesday!

Work has started on finishing the inside of the Stephenson Barn west side addition. Ralph, Rob and Mike (plus others not pictured) worked on framing in the “janitor” closet that will be used for storage of tables, chairs and cleaning supplies. After the area is framed in, next is working on electic.

Attention all kids! A new kids event has been added to the list of events at the Michigan Flywheelers Museum as it announces its schedule for 2020.
Scheduled for Saturday, July 18 at the museum, Kids Lawn Tractor Day will be packed full of fun driving activities for kids who have access to lawn tractors.
“We wanted to come up with something that would allow kids who aren’t of driving age yet, to drive their riding lawn mowers around the museum property,” explained Patrick Ingalls, museum president. “Because our annual events like the Antique Engine and Tractor Show are so congested, we don’t allow youngsters to drive equipment. Realizing that they are the future of our museum, we wanted to encourage their interest in tractors by hosting an event such as this.”
Activities for the day include a driving skills test, parade, tractor pulls and a mud bog.
The event, which is free, is open to any kids 14 and under who wish to drive a riding lawn mower. Mower decks must be removed and zero turn mowers not allowed. Parents and/or grandparents must accompany the kids. Camping is available. Activities start at 9 a.m.
Other events on this year’s schedule include Farm History Day on Friday, May 8, Swap Meet and Flea Market Friday, June 12 and Saturday, June 13 followed by the Antique Engine and Tractor Show which starts Thursday, Sept. 10 and runs through Sunday, Sept. 13.

We’ve just completed our last work weekend of the year, and just about everything (except the steamer) is put away for the winter. A big thank you to all our members who have worked hard all season long on a variety of projects like the Millinery Show, electrical upgrades, mowing, painting, fixing food and volunteering during our events. Every bit of help was appreciated. Now we switch over to our Winter work crew who will be working on machinery throughout the winter. Hopefully, we will see everyone next spring!
