Liberty Hyde Bailey Museum & Gardens

Liberty Hyde Bailey Museum & Gardens Earth Stewardship, Outdoor Learning, Food Consciousness, Arts and Rural Culture, Well-Balanced Life Summer hours run May through September. O. Box 626.

The Liberty Hyde Bailey Museum and Gardens(LHBM) is the birthplace and childhood home of America's Father of Modern Horticulture, Liberty Hyde Bailey (1858-1954), built in the Greek Revival style in 1858. We are a National Historic Place on the National Register of Historic Places; the only museum in the world dedicated solely to Bailey's life and work; a botanic garden featuring a collection of i

nterpretive horticultural gardens and a wooded nature trail; a research center featuring one of the most extensive library collections of Bailey's publications in the world and recently the home of the Bailey Family Library Collection spanning 1,000+ volumes; the site of South Haven's historic blacksmith's shop; and an educational outreach center serving the greater South Haven community. We would like to extend a heartfelt welcome to you, your friends, and your family to come investigate one of history's most interesting characters. Feel free to join us for events throughout the summer and fall, and, if you're so inclined, we hope you'll make a small contribution to help keep Bailey's beliefs alive. During the "off-season," we are open by appointment only, but do give us a ring, and we'll set up a time to meet and show you the place! Please send mail to P. South Haven, MI (269) 637-3251

If you came to Jena Johnson's presentation on Invasive Species last month, you would know that she talked about the common and glossy buckthorn as well as the japanese barberry, water hyacinth, and water lettuce - all of which have been have been officially banned from selling.

Michigan's long national nightmare is over. The state has banned the sale of the stinky pear tree, the voracious buckthorn shrub, and four other invasive plants.

Today is the last full day in the hut BECAUSE all 8 butterflies are hatched and fully dried! Even our torn-winged butterfly has proved that she can fly straight and is capable of living on her own.

We're giving the butterflies another day because it's a little too chilly outside - but tomorrow's warmer weather ensues their release!

We still are waiting for the last two butterflies to hatch. Because we still have a couple of chrysalides we are still keeping the light low so it doesn't disturb them too much - but we still shine a light for just a couple of moments for the butterflies to get some light. Doing this helps warm their bodies, assists wing expansion and drying. Hanging upside down also helps with wing expansion and drying.

Since yesterday, five butterflies have emerged, now at a total of six!

Unfortunately, one has a ripped wing (not shown in picture). The cause unknown. The butterfly will stay in captivity where it will be properly taken care of for a nice comfortable life.
