Coming up five weeks from today: old pottery identification & new wood fired pieces! Saturday, September 19, we will host NC pottery scholar Steve Compton for a fun day of identifying, discussing, and sharing information about old pottery. If you have an old piece of pottery, whether it’s from Jugtown, this area, or the region, that you’d like to find out more about, we hope you’ll bring it to Jugtown on Sept. 19! This is a fun event that we’ve hosted several times in the past and we’re excited to do so again this year. We will also have new pots just out of a firing of the Groundhog kiln. This will be a fun day and we hope you’ll join us as we all learn about the old pots that come in! Sales Cabin open for shopping 8:30-5:00 on the 19th; Old Pottery ID 10:00-12:00 & 1:00-3:00. Feel free to check in with us if you have questions leading up to the event!

A recent trip to MESDA that was inspiring and exciting! We love to look at these old pots - they are truly works of art, and are great inspiration to us. We’re lucky to have institutions like MESDA, with the Mariner collection on display, and we encourage you to visit if you haven’t. Bill and Susan, along with the wonderful team at MESDA, have brought together an amazing group of important pieces, right here in our state! Weathered Bronze: this glaze was developed by Pam in the early 1990’s. It utilizes a concentration of Black Copper Oxide to yield greens. We love it in the gas fired reduction kiln, as well as the wood kiln. The gas kiln tends to produce a more uniform surface, while the wood kiln creates more texture, and variation. Weathered Bronze lends itself to many of the Jugtown forms; giving them a timeless look. This glaze is both modern, and ancient looking all at once. These are from our two most recent firings.

Preview pictures and details for tomorrow & Sunday! The Sales Cabin at Jugtown is full with pots from the wood kiln. We had a great firing, with a really nice and diverse group of pots. This weekend is the Seagrove Wood Fire Tour, and 14 shops in our area participate in this self guided tour. Pick up a map and ride through the countryside to visit some great makers. Here at Jugtown, we will be open Saturday, June 6, 8:30-5:00 & Sunday, June 7, 10:00-4:00. We look forward to seeing you!

Some thoughts about using a wood fired kiln to produce pottery, with pieces in Frogskin to show nuances that we do, and in some cases do not, have control over when they’re in the kiln. Just some things for you all to think about when watching our videos or visiting Jugtown and seeing the pots in person!
