Recently, we welcomed our friend Stephen Compton and wonderful photographer Jenn Ackerman for a visit here at Jugtown. The resulting article has been published by The National Gallery of Art, in their West to East series. This wonderfully curated group of articles and stories feature artists across the US and how they have been inspired by their communities. We’re always thrilled when the story of Jugtown’s founding by Jacques and Julianna Busbee is shared, as they have had a profound and lasting impact on our community and family. Join Travis this Sunday, September 27 at 2:00 at The Mint Museum on Randolph Road in Charlotte, NC for a lecture and panel discussion regarding NC’s clay culture! “The Past, Present, and Future of North Carolina Ceramics” will begin with a lecture and presentation by Mark Hewitt, followed by a discussion with panelists Cynthia Bringle, Ibrahim Said, and Travis Owens. Travis is excited to join these leaders of the clay community here in NC, and the afternoon will prove educational and inspiring for all who join. Thanks to The Mint Museum for hosting this event and for being such a wonderful resource!

Thanks so much to everyone who visited yesterday! We loved seeing all the old pots brought for identification - we all learned something! Also thank you to each of you who took home pots that were just out of the wood kiln! We have an amazing group of folks who care about and support potters in this state, and none of us would be here without you! Details for tomorrow, Saturday, September 19: new pots are in the Sales Cabin from our firing of the Groundhog kiln; we’re open 8:30-5:00 tomorrow. Tomorrow is Old Pottery ID Day at Jugtown as well! Just us as we host pottery scholar and author Steve Compton for identification of old pots - bring a pice that you’re curious about and we’ll all learn something new! Pottery ID 10:00-12:00 & 1:00-3:00 in the Sales Cabin. Enjoy these preview pictures - can’t wait to see you tomorrow!!

We’re very pleased with the results, and we’ll be sharing details and preview pictures the next couple days, of the pots that will be available this coming Saturday, September 19. One week from today! We have fired the wood kiln and will be posting preview pictures next week of all the new pots that will be available on Saturday, September 19! This is in conjunction with Old Pottery ID, happening in the back room of the Sales Cabin. We hope you’ll join us if you’re looking for information on an old pot that you’ve always been curious about. We will be joined by pottery scholar & author Stephen Compton, and we will have a great selection of books available for sale as well. Coming up five weeks from today: old pottery identification & new wood fired pieces! Saturday, September 19, we will host NC pottery scholar Steve Compton for a fun day of identifying, discussing, and sharing information about old pottery. If you have an old piece of pottery, whether it’s from Jugtown, this area, or the region, that you’d like to find out more about, we hope you’ll bring it to Jugtown on Sept. 19! This is a fun event that we’ve hosted several times in the past and we’re excited to do so again this year. We will also have new pots just out of a firing of the Groundhog kiln. This will be a fun day and we hope you’ll join us as we all learn about the old pots that come in! Sales Cabin open for shopping 8:30-5:00 on the 19th; Old Pottery ID 10:00-12:00 & 1:00-3:00. Feel free to check in with us if you have questions leading up to the event!

A recent trip to MESDA that was inspiring and exciting! We love to look at these old pots - they are truly works of art, and are great inspiration to us. We’re lucky to have institutions like MESDA, with the Mariner collection on display, and we encourage you to visit if you haven’t. Bill and Susan, along with the wonderful team at MESDA, have brought together an amazing group of important pieces, right here in our state! Thanks to all of you who appreciate works in clay - both new and old!

Weathered Bronze: this glaze was developed by Pam in the early 1990’s. It utilizes a concentration of Black Copper Oxide to yield greens. We love it in the gas fired reduction kiln, as well as the wood kiln. The gas kiln tends to produce a more uniform surface, while the wood kiln creates more texture, and variation. Weathered Bronze lends itself to many of the Jugtown forms; giving them a timeless look. This glaze is both modern, and ancient looking all at once. These are from our two most recent firings.
