We live and work in a unique community in the middle of North Carolina - Seagrove - where 100+ potters live and work throughout the countryside. I also work from my Irish studio in County Limerick, Ireland for June and July. My latest passion is wood firing. When subjecting my work to the reckless meandering of ash and flame inside the wood kiln, there is an edge where I teeter. Too much to one si

de of the edge or the other and my pots can be ruined - muddled with too much molten ash, reduced to boring vessels of brown clay. I am inspired by using local unprocessed materials to create pieces and enhance the surfaces.

I've got several fermenting crocks going in Kate Waltman's wood-fired kiln at The Triangle Studio in Seagrove in the next few days. Levi and I will be firing the kiln along with a crew of Seagrove Potters, some of whom are getting ready for the Seagrove Wood Fire NC studio tour June 6 and 7, 2026. The leaves on this pot took hours to complete.

Here's a favorite from the electric kiln we unloaded today. It's a vase made from clay from our property. I'll be firing another electric load tomorrow just in time to unload for the weekend's Celebration of Spring Pottery Tour, Friday, Saturday and Sunday 10-5.
