We love a great story! Especially a historical ones ๐. ๐๐ค๐
โจ A journal entry from the archives is getting its proper introduction. โจ
When the railroad finally reached Scottsville in 1886, it did more than give local residents a new way to travel.
It gave Allen County a new way to do business.
To***co, corn, wheat, livestock, lumber, barrel staves, wagon spokes, railroad ties, and other products moved through Scottsvilleโs freight depot and out to markets far beyond the county. Goods from across the country came back in the other direction.
Our earlier Journal entry on the Scottsville Train Depot focused largely on the passenger side of the railroad story, the trains, the travelers, and the connection they gave Scottsville to the wider world.
What the Railroad Carried: The Freight Depot That Changed Scottsville tells the other half.
It looks at the freight that passed through town, the businesses that developed around the railroad, and the role the depot played in helping transform East Main Street into an important commercial district.
And unlike the passenger depot standing today, the old wooden freight depot is not a reconstruction.
It is a surviving piece of Scottsvilleโs original railroad era.
This entry has actually been in The Scottsville Journal for a little while, but between work, school, and everything else, I never gave it the proper introduction here on Facebook.
So, if you read our original Train Depot story, consider this Part Two. ๐
